RAMBLIN’ RECK: North Vermillion, Linton, Casey remain unbeaten on gridiron

TERRE HAUTE — • Tom-Cattin’ It — Milt Campbell, one of the finest athletes to play for Indiana University, has died at the age of 78.

He played football and competed in track for the Hoosiers and was the first African-American athlete to become an Olympic decathlon champion, beating Rafer Johnson to do it.

His career at IU was interrupted by Navy service.

He is a member of the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.

• Kirk Kennedy has resigned as football coach at Bloomington South. He had a 4-26 mark in three seasons.

He formerly had coached at Lowell.

• Austin Karazsia of Linton is a finalist for the Wendy’s Heisman Award in football in Indiana.

• Bryan Clauson is the 2012 U.S. Auto Club sprint car champion. He is the youngest to earn that honor at 23.

• The Los Angeles Lakers finally won a game in the NBA, beating Detroit 108-79 after starting out 0-3.

• Evansville won another college men’s basketball exhibition, defeating Illinois-Springfield 79-54.
