RAMBLIN’ RECK: Pacers having a ‘Garden Party’

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana Pacers are back in form and looking good.

The Pacers were at their best last week to wrap up their series against Atlanta, ending a 13-game losing streak on the Hawks’ home court.

Two days later, they were in prime form and completely dominated the first game of their series with the New York Knicks, winning 102-95. One publication dubbed it “Garden Party,” since it wiped out the Knicks’ early home-court advantage.

They’ll play again in the Garden tonight, then play two games in Indianapolis, the first one being Saturday.

Miami had been idle for some time after sweeping its opening series against Milwaukee. The Heat and Chicago played the first game of their Eastern Division Series on Monday.

Tom-Cattin’ It

• Anthony Johnson of Oblong and Aaron Siler of Robinson were two of the top scorers in the Little Illlini Conference last season.

Both players are headed for Eastern Illinois.

EIU recently signed 7-foot-2 Mat Piotrowski, who was at Southwestern Illinois for two seasons.

• Manolo Concepcion is the new University of Evansville volleyball coach.

He formerly was on the staff at the school and also was the coach at Western Carolina before working in a program in his native Puerto Rico.

• Former South Knox standout golfer Adam Schenk, now at Purdue, again has earned all-Big Ten honors. He led the Boilers with a 73.44 scoring average.

• Officials are considering a change in the college basketball shot clock, reducing it from 35 to 30 seconds even though scoring was the lowest last season at 67.50 points since 1952.

• Illinois should have two transfers in basketball next season: Illinois State forward Jon Ekey and Seton Hall guard Aaron Crosby. Ekey will be a graduate student and can play right away, while Crosby must sit out a year.

• Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle recently won his 700th game. He pointed out that he had 808 losses.

• USA TODAY announced its all-time alumni team in high school basketball: LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garrett, and Jason Kidd.

That bunch would not lose many games.

• Indiana players are on this year’s USA TODAY girls all-star basketball team. Taya Reimer of Hamilton Southeastern is on the first team, and Stephanie Mavunga of Brownsburg is on the second team.

Reimer is going to Notre Dame and Mavunga to North Carolina.

• Weather permitting, USAC sprint racing is slated for Saturday at Tri-State Speedway at Haubstadt. Rainy and cold weather have wiped out three programs the past two weekends.

• Stan Benge built a powerhouse at Ben Davis in girls basketball before taking an assistant’s job at IUPUI. He recently was named the girls coach at Roncalli.
