Ramblin’ Reck: Reflections plentiful from memorable Indianapolis 500

TERRE HAUTE — The 98th running of the Indianapolis 500 is history and will go down as one of the best.

Weather was perfect and the finish was second closest ever with Ryan Hunter-Reay nipping Helio Castroneves at the finish.

There were few yellow caution periods with the first incident coming on the 150th lap and a race record was established with 6,105 laps completed by the drivers.

Only Graham Rahal and Buddy Lazier failed to make it halfway through the race.

And the red flag was thrown to insure a clean, close finish with the winner nipping Helio by 0.06 of a second.

Kurt Busch completed the double and finished a strong sixth in Indy before being hurt by an engine problem in the World 600 to finish 40th, just behind Danica Patrick. On Tuesday, he was named the race’s 2014 Sunoco Rookie of the Year.

It was good to see Jeff Gordon hold the lead late in the NASCAR race before being passed by Jimmie Johnson and finishing seventh. He remains the leader in the point totals.

Miners on court — Linton defeated Bloomfield 3-2 to win the North Daviess Sectional title in girls tennis action last week.

The Miners were paired against 12-2 Vincennes Rivet in the Jasper Regional. Jasper met Paoli in the other regional match.

Tom-Cattin’ It — Funeral services have been conducted for Donald “Butch” Rees, an old friend of mine who played basketball for Jasper High School and Texas Wesleyan, where his name is in the record books.

He coached high school basketball for several years before retiring at Hutsonville-Palestine in Illinois. We got to know Rees when both of us were in a group that detasseled corn for Pioneer Corn Co. in Tipton — a long time ago.
