Ramblin’ Reck: We’ve lost 2 ‘good guys,’ but another is in stroke recovery

TERRE HAUTE — Some reflections and thoughts on some of the “good guys” in sports.

•  Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday in Marshall, Ill., for Carrol “Nellie” Bennett, who died Sunday.

He coached boys basketball teams at Marshall and Martinsville for a long time and was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in recognition of his efforts.

We covered some of his games. He was always a good interview after the games. And we used to see him at the harness races in Illinois where he and his wife sold race programs.

•  Funeral services were conducted last week for former Indiana State men’s basketball coach Royce Waltman.

We can only echo all the things written and said about him. He rejuvenated ISU basketball. His teams won lots of games, earned Missouri Valley Conference honors and titles, made trips to the NCAA Championships and won a game, and beat the Indiana Hoosiers.

He was one of the best we’ve had the chance to work with over the years.

•  There’s good news to report about Gordon Stauffer, another former ISU coach.

He suffered a stroke about three weeks ago in Florida and recently was moved to rehab after being in the hospital since the stroke.

Fans can write him at Life Care Center, 606 E. Sheridan Road, Melbourne, FL, 32901, or call at 312-768-5276.

•  Rich Schelsky has been named a district girls basketball coach of the year by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

He’s in his fourth year as the coach at Western Boone, and his teams have compiled a 66-22 record. This year’s team was 18-6, won a Class 3A sectional and advanced to the regional finals.

Schelsky previously had lots of success as the baseball coach at Rockville, and he plays a mean game of golf.

•  Tom-Cattin’ It — More high school seniors have decided where they will go to college.

Lauren Moses of Shiloh in Illinois will play basketball at Parkland College.

Shelby Virostko of Riverton Parke will play basketball at Olney Central.

Paul Heithaus of Greencastle will play soccer at Ohio Wesleyan. He was a four-year starter for the Tiger Cubs.

•  Paris and Marshall recently met in baseball, with the Tigers winning 2-1. Alex Elmore hurled a no-hitter for the Tigers.

•  Terre Haute North grad Matt O’Leary says he will transfer from Loyola of Chicago to play basketball elsewhere.

•  Union scored a major upset in college hockey, defeating Minnesota for the national championship.

•  Buddy Lazier has lots of fans in this area and around the state. He will drive in his 18th Indianapolis 500.

•  Alonzo Mourning and coaches Nolan Richardson and Gary Williams will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. ISU fans will recall that Richardson had great success at Tulsa and won a national championship at Arkansas.

•  An attendance record of 158,682 was set at this year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four. Total attendance for the tournament was 739,189, and 96 percent of the seats sold for the four regionals.

•  Former ISU quarterback Ronnie Fouch has joined the staff of former coach Trent Miles at Georgia State as a graduate assistant.

•  Layne Curley of Terre Haute North was named to the Metropolitan Interscholastic all-conference team in basketball.

•  The Indy Eleven is the newest pro team in Indianapolis, and the soccer team made its home debut before a full house of an estimated 10,000-plus fans on Saturday at Carroll Stadium.

•  Former Missouri Valley Conference basketball coach Jim Molinari has joined the staff at Nebraska. He was the coach at Western Illinois last season.

•  Xavier is losing its two top scorers from the men’s basketball team.

Leading scorer Semaj Christon is leaving after two years for the National Basketball Association. Redshirt junior Justin Martin will complete his undergraduate degree and will be able to play one year at another school without sitting out.

•  Jim Tressel has applied to become president at Youngstown State, where he was football coach before taking the same job at Ohio State. He previously applied for the same post at Akron.

Tom Reck can be contacted by telephone at 812-232-3231, by email at or by mail at 4284 S.Fifth St., Apt. 3, Terre Haute, IN, 47802.
