Ramblin’ Reck: Regular season winding down in high school basketball

TERRE HAUTE — Time flies when you’re having fun … and playing basketball.

It’s hard to believe that the regular season ends this week for high school basketball teams that we cover in Illinois. The postseason begins next Monday.

Paris, Casey and Marshall have the top marks and Robinson has had some good wins playing a tough schedule.

Paris and Robinson will be host teams for Class 2A regional action next week. Casey is the top seed at the Robinson site while Sullivan is No. 1 and Paris No. 2 at Paris.

Paris was slated to meet Effingham on Tuesday. The Tigers took a 15-8 record and five-game winning streak into the contest.

The weather forecast certainly looked a lot nicer this morning. Looks like all the games on the schedule in Illinois and Indiana will be played. Indiana teams will close out the regular season next week and the draw will be made for the tourney on Sunday.

ISU looks good — Indiana State continues to look good in the weekly RPI rankings.

The Sycamores are 56th in the list. Kansas remains No. 1 and Wichita State is seventh, while Wisconsin is the top Big Ten team at 6.

Some other totals: Creighton 8, St. Louis 11, Belmont 61, Illinois 91, Indiana 102, Northwestern 104, Notre Dame 105, Northern Iowa 106, Purdue 108, Missouri State 109.

In last week’s Sagarin rankings, ISU was 81. Some other totals: Michigan State 4, Creighton 10, Wichita State 15, St. Louis 24, Indiana 53, Illinois 64, Nebraska 71, Notre Dame 78, Purdue 94, Butler 98, Northern Iowa 114.

St. Louis defeated VCU last week for a 23-2 mark and 17 in a row.

In one of the polls last week, Wichita State had teams in the Top 25 of both the men’s and women’s polls.
