RAMBLIN' RECK: Home run, no-hitter add up to special day for Reed

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South baseball player A.J. Reed had some sort of a special day Saturday as the Braves took two from Ben Davis in Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference action.

To wit:

• The senior hit a home run — a three-run shot — to tie the South school record in career homers.

• He hurled a five-inning no-hitter, walking one batter and getting a save in the other game.

Not bad.

The South and Northview softball teams also had a good weekend.

The Knights remained unbeaten by winning a tournament championship at Jasper — this tournament always has some of the top teams in Southern Indiana in the field — and South won a tournament in Kentucky, beating two teams by a combined score of 24-3.

• Wise words — We have received some more words of wisdom from the person who has sent others in the past.

The first: “If you wake up and you’re an overnight success, you probably were never asleep.”

Others:

“Adversity causes some men to break, others to break records.”

“You can’t get control of your temper if you keep losing it.”

“Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.”

“You can’t climb the ladder of success with your hands in your pockets.”

“It is nice to be important but more important to be nice.”

And this comment from Michael Jordan: “Any fear is an illusion. You think something is standing in your way but nothing really is there.

“What is there is opportunity to do your best and gain some success. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it or work around it.”

• Busy week — Weather permitting, this week will be a busy one for Vigo County boys high school golf teams.

It starts today with the county match at Rea Park. It will be the first nine-hole match for Terre Haute North because of a cancellation last week.

The Patriots took fourth in nasty weather on Saturday in the Danville Invitational. Cloverdale was seventh, and senior Chris Arnold of the Clovers was medalist with 77.

South and other schools in the area were slated to play in a tournament on the regional course at Washington but it was canceled.

Following the county, South has a match with Owen Valley on Wednesday, and West Vigo plays Rockville on Thursday.

All three schools and others in the area will be in the South Invitational scheduled for Saturday at Rea Park.

Effingham St. Anthony won the event last year and planned to be in the tournament again, but will not be able to because of the observance of Holy Week.
