Tom Reck: Postseason prep action heats up this week

TERRE HAUTE — High school postseason competition fills the Tribune-Star sports schedules this week.

First up is regional action in volleyball in Indiana. Northview is competing in Class 3A for the first time and is at Shelbyville tonight.

The Knights have compiled a stellar 112-27 mark the past four years and have won a record 33 games and counting this season. The junior varsity also set a record this season with 21 victories.

In Class A, Indiana Deaf is at Bloomfield and postseason play began Monday in Illinois.

In football, Casey and Robinson will begin postseason play this week in Illinois. Terre Haute North and South play their first sectional games in Indiana while Linton, North Vermillion, Sullivan, South Putnam and North Central all play their second contests.

Casey defeated Marshall last week to conclude its eighth undefeated season in a decade. The Warriors have won 20 games in a row in the regular season, last losing to Marshall in 2011.

North Vermillion has won 19 regular-season games in a row while Linton has had three straight perfect marks and has won 30 regular-season games in a row, last losing to North Daviess in 2010.

Greencastle had a nice 8-1 season, losing only to Tri-West, but lost to the same team in its sectional opener. South Putnam, meanwhile, won its first West Central Conference title since 1999.

Cross country teams will vie for state honors on Saturday at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course with the Terre Haute South boys and Terre Haute North girls in the field.

Best of luck to all teams and individuals from the Valley.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Calvin Johnson of Detroit had 329 yards in pass receptions on Sunday against Dallas. His total is second only to the 336 snared by Flipper Anderson of the Los Angeles Rams in 1989 and that game went into overtime.

• Bailey Hayes was the first female runner from Rockville to gain the semistate in cross country.

• Bloomington South’s Lauren Whitlock says she will play college basketball at Penn. She averaged 17 points and 8.1 rebounds last season.

• Terre Haute North grad Jake Newton is playing for Lincoln Trail in Illinois. He plans to continue his college career at SIU-Edwardsville.

• Illinois won its first exhibition men’s basketball game, defeating McKendree 101-66. The Illini wiped out an early 30-20 deficit with a 27-9 run at the end of the first half to go up 47-39 at halftime.

• The Chicago Bulls were 8-0 in preseason NBA games and begin the season against Miami tonight. The Indiana Pacers take on Orlando and a new statue of Larry Bird will be shown for the first time at the game. Danny Granger will not be in the lineup for Indiana because of a strained calf that could sideline him for awhile.

• It’ll be a busy night in St. Louis tonight with the Rams playing host to Seattle and the Cardinals facing Boston in the fifth game of the World Series. Wonder if there can be yet another strange ending to that baseball game? The two teams combined for nine miscues in the first three games.

• Tom Brady of New England has 324 touchdown passes in the NFL. He trails only Brett Favre (508), Peyton Manning (465) and Dan Marino (420) and passed Fran Tarkenton on Sunday.
