Rolling Colts appear to be the real deal

TERRE HAUTE — Some of Monday’s headlines in sports pages pretty well summed up another interesting weekend in the National Football League.

Seattle Slew

• Indianapolis defeats Seattle 34-28 and should have convinced more folks the Colts are for real. For the third game in a row, they did not allow the opposition to score a second-half touchdown.

Bengals deny Brady

• Cincinnati bests New England 13-6, holding the Patriots to two field goals and ending Tom Brady’s string of games with at least one TD pass at 52.

Tale of two Mannings: 0-5 and 5-0

• Philadelphia defeats the New York Giants 36-21, leaving the Giants and Eli Manning at 0-5, the first time the Giants have had that mark since 1987.

Denver bests Dallas in a real shootout 51-48 and the Broncos and Peyton Manning are 5-0. Dallas is 2-3.

Next up for the Colts: San Diego

• Carmel cruises — The season ended for all Indiana high school girls golf teams last week with the state finals played at The Legends of Indiana.

The strength of the Roncalli Regional again was borne out in the results.

Carmel finished second in the regional and won the state. The Greyhounds shot 604 to finish 27 shots ahead of Penn, ranked No. 1 most of the season. Zionsville, the winner of the regional, took third with 639.

Two Carmel players, Makenzie Curtis and Maggie Rees, finished third and fourth, respectively, as individuals. They are on the all-state list released Monday along with Lucy Stevens of Zionsville.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Ben Davis whipped top-ranked Center Grove in football last week 37-20 and Carmel bested Warren Central 21-15.

Linton and North Vermillion remained unbeaten and the Miners have a big game this week against Sheridan.

• Michelle Cummins has resigned as volleyball coach at South Knox. She had been coaching the team since 2007 and had a 104-88 record.

• Miami of Ohio has fired football coach Don Treadwell after the RedHawks started 0-5. Offensive coordinator John Klacik also was let go. Treadwell finished 8-21 at his alma mater.

• There’s a good reason the Los Angeles Dodgers are in the NL Division Series. They had a 62-28 mark in the final 90 games.

• Trevon Bluiett of Park Tudor recently said he planned to sign with UCLA but now has reopened recruiting, stating he is looking for a school closer to home.
