RAMBLIN' RECK: Big week for preps, ISU, Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE — Monday began one of the biggest weeks ever in basketball in the Wabash Valley or at least one of the biggest.

First, Indiana high school boys teams commence sectional play tonight while the Robinson Maroons hope to extend their postseason run with success in the St. Joseph-Ogden Sectional. It is a tough field.

Second, college teams head into the postseason. Indiana State’s men’s team opens defense of its Missouri Valley Conference tournament title. The Sycamores got a nice victory at Missouri State last week and played well enough to win against tough Creighton, losing by one point before a very nice crowd.

Rose-Hulman will be in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since 1999 and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College will vie for honors in the USCAA national tournament.

Congrats to coach Jim Shaw, his staff and players for winning the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament, beating a tough Transylvania team on its home court. Good luck in the NCAA action.

Finally, the Indiana High School Athletic Association girls state finals will be played in Terre Haute for the first time.

Eight teams will vie for the four class championships with 19-4 Northeast Dubois facing No. 1-ranked, 24-2 Fort Wayne Canterbury in the Class A game at 10:30 a.m.

Dubois is my alma mater as many know – class of 1955. The girls have won 10 sectionals – a record I think – and are in the finals for the second time, losing to Tri-Central 47-46 in 2005.

Dubois is in the tough Blue Chip Conference and often has lost to conference rivals in the regional round, namely 2011 champ Vincennes Rivet, Loogootee, Barr-Reeve and North Knox, now a 2A team.

Alan Matheis is the coach and has done a super job with an 11-year mark of 183-87. He is a former player and also has coached the boys basketball team and served as athletic director.

The team's nickname is the Jeeps and does not refer to the vehicle. Students voted the buddy of Popeye in the comic strips as the nickname long before I was in school.

Jeep is a gray-colored character with a big nose and tail that curls up in the rear. If you go to the games, you'll likely hear fans yell his name during the competition.

Canterbury will be a tough team, seeking its fourth title in five seasons.

Scott Krieger has a 251-88 mark in 14 seasons and has been named coach of the Indiana All-Stars this summer. His assistants will be Alaina Harrington of Bloomington North and Karla Rieckers of Brownstown Central.

Columbus North will battle Indianapolis North Central for the 4A championship.

Former Indianapolis Star sportswriter Pat McKee is in his second year at North. He is the brother of Ed McKee, former ISU sports information director and Indiana Pacers PA man.

• Tom-Cattin’ It – Hamilton Heights cross country runner Sydney Chapman has signed with Indiana State.

Ace Terre Haute North junior basketball player Nicole Anderson says she will sign with Bowling Green. She’s also a good golfer for the Patriots.

• Hamilton SE  was eighth in the Midwest Region in last week's USA Today boys prep cage poll and meets Indianapolis North Central tonight in a banner sectional contest.

• NIck Hutcheson of Greencastle ranks fifth in the current state rebound totals. He is one of the few players to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

• Indiana University won its first Big Ten indoor track title since 1992, scoring 104 points and trailed by Minnesota with 100 and Nebraska with 99.

• Carmel won the state high school boys swimming championship, scoring 246 points to edge Bloomington North with 245.

• John Grimes of Marian was named Mid-Central Conference coach of the year in men’s basketball. Grimes is an Indiana State and Terre Haute Gerstmeyer graduate.

• Mel Daniels was chosen by the old ABA committee to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame next year. He played with the Indiana Pacers from 1968 to 1974 and was named ABA MVP twice.

He was one of the assistant coaches for the ISU team that lost to Michigan State in the 1979 NCAA championship.

More inductees will be named in April and former Pacer Reggie Miller is a finalist.

• Gibson Southern has named Nick Hart as its football coach. He played for Evansville Reitz and has been an assistant under his father, John, at Warren Central.
