RAMBLIN' RECK: Big week brought ISU alumni to Terre Haute in droves

TERRE HAUTE — • Prep patter — Warren Central was ranked 13th in the USA Today prep football poll last week and first in the Midwest Region. Carmel was sixth in the Midwest.

Warren Central beat Center Grove 54-21 to finish unbeaten while Carmel bested Ben Davis 30-20 to claim second place in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference.

Cincinnati Moeller was ranked 16th in the USA Today poll last week and lost to Indianapolis Cathedral 26-24 on a game-ending 40-yard field goal.

Other teams finishing unbeaten were Linton, North Putnam and Castle.

Marshall goes for a perfect mark this week in Illinois against a good Robinson team.

Rising Sun finished fifth in the South Dearborn cross country sectional last week to qualify for the regional. Rob Roads, Terre Haute North grad, is in his first year as the the coach.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Purdue got a commitment in men’s basketball from 7-footer A.J. Hammons of Gary (and formerly of Carmel), who attends Oak Hill Academy.

Former Indy North Central player D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera also is at Oak Hill Academy and says he will sign with Georgetown. Lawrence North guard Petey Balls plans to go to Northern Illinois.

Indiana University will play the University of Indianapolis in an exhibition game Nov. 5. Indy defeated Tennessee in exhibition action last year.

• Riverton Parke won its first Banks of the Wabash volleyball championship since 2003.

• Jimmy Beasley is the new girls basketball coach at Turkey Run.

• Carmel won its seventh state championship in boys tennis, defeating North Central 5-0 in the finals and Park Tudor 3-2 in the semis. North Central bested Center Grove 4-1 in the other semifinal match.

• ISU grad Kurt Wayton is coaching and teaching in New Jersey. His high school cross country team is ranked 12th in the country and second in New Jersey to No. 1 Christian Brothers Academy.
