RAMBLIN’ RECK: Louisville gets two shots at NCAA title

TERRE HAUTE — Louisville met Michigan in the championship game of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on Monday. Louisville faces Connecticut in the title tilt of the women’s tournament tonight.

The 1975-76 Indiana University team last week was voted the best team to win a championship. Lots of Hoosier fans will tell you the 1974-75 team was just as good, losing only one game after Scott May was sidelined with injury.

Panelists from USA Today voted for the best of the 74 Final Fours and, to no one’s surprise, ranked the 1979 finals No. 1 marked by the Indiana State/Larry Bird-Michigan State/Magic Johnson matchup.

We covered several finals. Some we remember:

1987 — Keith Smart’s shot sinks Syracuse to give IU and Bob Knight the title.

1973 — Bill Walton made 21 of 22 shots as UCLA beat Memphis in the final game. IU and Providence were the other teams in the finals.

1980 — Darrell Griffith led Louisville over UCLA in the championship game played at Indianapolis. Purdue and Iowa were the other teams in the finals and Denny Crum coached Louisville.

Coaches hired — Several changes have been made in the college coaching ranks recently. In case you missed them:

Tubby Smith was let go by Minnesota and hired at Texas Tech. Richard Pitino is the new coach at Minnesota.

Steve Alford has hired Ed Schilling for his staff at UCLA. Schilling formerly coached Wright State and has been at Park Tudor the past four seasons, leading the team to two Class 2A titles and compiling an 87-18 record.

Former Washington Hatchet Craig Neal is the new coach at New Mexico. He had been on Alford’s staff at that school and at Iowa.

Andy Enfield was hired away from Florida Gulf Coast by Southern California. And Matthew Graves is the new coach at South Alabama after paying his dues at Butler.
