Ramblin' Reck: Final BCS national title picture still unclear

TERRE HAUTE — With one improbable finish and another near-upset last week, the question of which teams are best in college football remains clouded, especially in regards to the national championship game.

Florida State is No. 1 today and deserves to be, but strength of schedule could keep the Seminoles from being No. 1 in the final rankings — assuming they beat Duke this week, and the Blue Devils have had a banner season. Football has challenged basketball for being best on campus.

Ohio State is the other undefeated team and will be favored to handle Michigan State in Indy this week as Urban Meyer takes a 24-0 mark as OSU coach into the contest. Again, strength of schedule is not in the Buckeyes’ favor.

Auburn rightfully moved up following its upset of Alabama on the return of a missed field goal. Awesome — and Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban probably wishes he had not gotten that second back at the end of the contest.

The Tigers have the toughest challenge in their game this week. Missouri is a solid team and has lost only once, when its quarterback was on the sidelines.

And Bama probably should enter into the final consideration.

It should be interesting.

• Great win — Several teams had nice victories last week and the girls basketball team at Marshall in Illinois had the best.

The Lions won a tournament championship at Robinson by beating Mt. Carmel 57-53. Tyra Buss, the reigning Illinois Miss Basketball, leads Mt. Carmel and had 33 points in the title game but Marshall had more balance. Breah Keim had 25 points and Kaydie Grooms had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Nice win, Lions.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Two more boys basketball teams in the area commence play tonight with the Casey Warriors playing Terre Haute South. Casey is loaded with veteran talent and will be one of the favorites to win the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic title.

The draw will be made for the tournament today at Terre Haute North, scene of the action this season. Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer Bill Newton of Rockville will make the draw.

• Josh Buis has stepped down as football coach at Greencastle High School. His teams were 26-6 in three years with one team being unbeaten in the regular season and another losing just once.

• Just as Indiana State has honored Larry Bird with a statue, Evansville native son Don Mattingly, the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has had a statue placed in his honor at Bosse Field in the Pocket City.

• New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees has been named the winner of the Big Ten Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Award. Brees, of course, played college ball at Purdue and now is leading the Saints to a stellar comeback season.

Tony Romo of Dallas, meanwhile, has had a touchdown pass in 25 straight games for the Cowboys.

• Kentucky’s basketball team recently won its 500th game in Rupp Arena.
