RAMBLIN RECK: Pigskin soon to fly on campus

TERRE HAUTE — The first kickoffs for college football games are slated at the end of the month, and national publications continue to release their preseason rankings.

Nearly all of the early lists have Alabama first and Ohio State second. ESPN The Magazine released its Top 25 last week and did not vary from early form.

The top two are followed, in order, by Oregon, Stanford, Texas A&M, Georgia, South Carolina, Louisville, Clemson and Florida to fill the Top 10.

They are followed by Florida State, LSU, Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, TCU, UCLA, Nebraska, Boise State, Northwestern, Oregon State, USC and Baylor. If you are counting, four Big Ten teams are in that list including Northwestern. It will be interesting to see which two meet in the conference title tilt in Indy.

The current issue of the magazine also has a lengthy, interesting story on Johnny Manziel. It offers a different insight into the reigning Heisman Trophy winner.

n Several colleges will be playing football for the first time this fall or starting the sport again.

One of those schools playing for the first time is Florida Tech, coached by former Terre Haute North and Indiana State player Steve Englehart, who also was the coach at Rose-Hulman.

Some of the other schools going football are Charlotte, Stetson, Mercer, Houston Baptist and Berry.

• On the links — The PGA Championship ended Sunday with mixed results for some of the top players.

Jason Dufner finally won a major with a 10-under-par score and had a record round in the progress, helping erase the frustration of 2011 when he let the title slip away in the same event. Keegan Bradley won that year and was one of the first to congratulate Dufner on Sunday.

Rory McIlroy has not had a great year but finished in a tie at 3-under.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson both made the cut but that’s about it. Mickelson was 12-over at the finish, the third-worst score. Tiger was better at 4-over.

Locally, congrats to course champs Bob Kyle at Geneva Hills and Troy Farris at Forest Park.

The junior interclub is scheduled for Friday at the Country Club of Terre Haute, and the Terre Haute senior city is this weekend at Rea Park and Hulman Links.

• Max Papis filled in for the injured Tony Stewart in Sunday’s NASCAR race and finished 15th. Another driver figures to be in the car this week.

• Lawrence Central is ranked 20th in the USA Today preseason prep football rankings. No other Indiana team is in the top 50.

• Two major league baseball pitchers who have long streaks without a losing season have to start winning to keep that mark intact.

Andy Pettitte has not had a minus mark in 17 straight years, while CC Sabathia’s figure is 10 seasons.
