RAMBLIN’ RECK: A week of racing awaits Valley fans

TERRE HAUTE — It’s the first week of July — how time flies — and a busy period for lots of sports fans in different areas.

Racing in different forms is slated beginning tonight with NASCAR Night at the Action Track, with Ken Schrader and Tony Stewart running in UMP modifieds along with the final KISS race of the season.

The Hut Hundred for USAC midgets is Wednesday at Illinois. This race started and was run in Terre Haute for a long time.

USAC sprints will be on the track at Lincoln Park Speedway on Thursday and a regular program is set for Saturday with fireworks.

Regular racing with the Bernie Mann Memorial is on the card at Crossroads Dragway on Saturday.

Ellis Park opens Thursday for live thoroughbred horse racing and will run through Labor Day. Harness racing is on the Martinsville, Ill., Agricultural Fair schedule next week.

Golfers may want to compete in the Firecracker Open to be played Thursday at Hulman Links. It is a two-man event with three six-round segments and has six divisions, including parent-child and ladies.

The city junior golf tournament will be played next week, and the men’s city tournament begins July 13.

The sodding project is under way at Hulman Links with zoysia grass being put down and three holes being completely redone.

Baseball is on the schedule with Wayne Newton having a game tonight and youth tournaments beginning at various sites in the area.

And, of course, fireworks displays are on tap for Thursday night. Have fun.

• First Cup matches played — The first Hall of Fame Cup matches were played at Hulman Links and the Vigo County team edged its Wabash Valley counterparts by one point.

This event is being played in memory of Gene Verostko and George Kaperak.

Hall of Famer Bob Arnett recalled the time when those gentlemen were kings of the sport in the area.

Arnett was a longtime writer of a golf column for the Tribune-Star and he says his Rub of the Green columns will be available in book form.

The Cup is a nice event and we hope it lasts for a long time.
