RAMBLIN' RECK: North Central’s senior pitcher on a tear in postseason action

TERRE HAUTE — The final state champs of the 2010-11 season in Indiana high school sports will be decided this week and the Valley is well represented.

North Central faces Lafayette Central Catholic on Friday at Victory Field for the Class A championship in baseball.

The Thunderbirds bested Loogootee to win the semistate played at Jasper. Craig Grow is in his first season as the North Central coach and was the coach of a successful Loogootee team in 1983.

One senior is on the North Central roster, but he’ll be missed.

Craig Bell was the winning pitcher in the regional title tilt and has been on a tear on offense in postseason action, setting a single-season school record when he hit his 13th homer last week.

Terre Haute South and Brandon Bekkering of South Vermillion begin their bids in golf today at The Legends of Indiana Course.

Bekkering is making his first trip to the finals, while Thomas Goss of South has made it for the fourth time. He was with the team twice and qualified as an individual last year.

South twice has finished second in the golf tournament — in 1989 and 2006. The Braves are making their fifth trip to state in Chris Cassell’s tenure as coach.

Since all five of the South players and Bekkering are recent graduates, they’d all like to close out their high school careers on a strong note.

Good luck to all of our Valley athletes.

• Nice finish — Former Northview golfer Kade Baker recently competed in the national junior college tournament played at Goose Pond in Alabama.

Baker qualified as a individual while playing for Rend Lake College.

He finished 45th in the field of 127 golfers with rounds of 76, 77, 73 and 77 for his 303 score.

He will be working at a coal mine this summer and plans to enroll at Indiana State University in the fall, majoring in criminal justice.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Edgewood edged out Northview to win the all-sports title again in the Western Indiana Conference.

The Mustangs finished four points ahead of the Knights. Brown County was third.

• Two men who made their mark in the seventh games of World Series died last week.

Jim Northrup hit a two-run triple off Bob Gibson in 1968 to help Detroit beat St. Louis in seven games. He played 12 years in the big leagues.

Jose Pagan drove in the eventual winning run for Pittsburgh in 1971 when the Bucs bested Baltimore. His hit put the Pirates up 2-0 and they won 2-1. Pagan was in the majors 15 years, starting his career with San Francisco.

• Rachel Helt plans to attend Hanover College and play golf. She helped Terre Haute North win a sectional championship last fall.

• Purdue athlete Patrick Bade plans to switch sports. He’s played basketball the past two years and should be on the football field this fall.
