Ramblin' Reck: Upsets leave Syracuse in No. 1 spot

TERRE HAUTE — A wild week of men’s college basketball action ended Sunday with Indiana’s Hoosiers knocking off Big Ten leader Michigan 63-52.

The upsets began earlier in the week when Northwestern won at Wisconsin and Penn State prevailed at Ohio State. The Buckeyes rebounded to win at Wisconsin.

In other games, IU lost at Nebraska  — 3-5 in the Big Ten — and Michigan State lost to Georgetown.

Arizona suffered its first loss, losing 60-58 to California and losing forward Brandon Ashley, probably for the rest of the season, with a foot injury.

Syracuse bested Duke in a classic contest and has assumed first place in both of the major polls. The Orangemen and Wichita State are the only unbeaten majors and the Shockers are second in the USA Today/ESPN poll going into Wednesday’s game in Hulman Center against Indiana State.

The Sycamores rebounded nicely from a loss at Southern Illinois to get another road victory at Northern Iowa and will try to hand the Shockers their first defeat in a game that will be televised by the Missouri Valley Conference TV network.

The ISU-WSU action is being touted by the national media and it would be nice to have a big crowd in Hulman Center.

WSU comes to town with the nation’s best road mark in three-plus seasons and also will play at Northern Iowa this week, with that game on ESPN2.

The Sycamores are 56th in Monday’s RPI rankings and Wichita State is No. 6. Some others: Kansas 1, Creighton 10, Indiana 67, Illinois 68, Butler 93, Illinois State 108, Purdue 110, Northern Iowa 112 and Notre Dame 115.
