RAMBLIN’ RECK: Nationwide golf tour hits Evansville

TERRE HAUTE — Golfers and fans of pro golf will have a chance to watch the professional sport up close and personal this week.

The United Leasing Championship, a Nationwide Tour event, will be played at Victoria National Golf Club in the Newburgh-Evansville area starting Wednesday with a Pro-Am.

It’s the first year for this event to be played on the top-50 course, with a field of 156 competing. The Golf Channel will carry all the action.

Top money winners from the Nationwide Tour have earned spots on the PGA Tour and this route now is more important since Q-School will be eliminated. Chad Collins earned his slot on the Tour by being in the Top 25 in Nationwide earnings.

One of the players in the field will be former PGA Tour player Lee Janzen, who is a two-time winner of the U.S. Open.

Casey Wittenberg is second on the current Nationwide money list and will be in the tournament following a tie for 10th at this year’s U.S. Open.

Two tournaments will be played in the area this weekend. The annual Brazil Open is at Forest Park and Mundy’s Game is at Hulman Links.

• Clarify — We mentioned last week that Sean McDonough was scheduled for head surgery after doing the U.S. Open for ESPN.

After receiving a call, we realized it needed more explanation.

He is scheduled for Aug. 7 surgery after being diagnosed for superior canal dehiscence syndrome.

• Draft set — The annual NBA Draft is set for Thursday.

Anthony Davis of Kentucky will be the No. 1 pick in the draft which is regarded as a deep one.

Because of their success this season, the Indiana Pacers will not draft until 26th but could move up with a trade.

Meyers Leonard of Robinson, Ill., is in it after playing two years for Illinois and could be in the Top 10, while former Mr. Basketball Tyler Zeller of Washington and North Carolina likely will be in the Top 15.

Robbie Hummel of Purdue had a workout with the Pacers but may not be picked in the first round due to his injuries.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Recent Clay City retirees Jean Schlegel and Keith Jones will be honored this evening.

Jones competed in Eel athletics and coached many of the sports in his long tenure, coaching track this past spring.

Schlegel was on the staff for more than 30 years.

• Jacob Cummings will continue to coach at North Central and will do volleyball and girls basketball.

• Mikayla Crane of Shakamak will play softball at Lincoln Trail. She was a leader on the team that won sectional and regional titles.

• Brock Dowell of Shakmak will play in the baseball North-South all-star game in Jasper along with Cody Thornton of West Vigo.

• Big Ten athletes of the year are Michigan State basketball player Draymond Green and Ohio State track athlete Christina Manning.

• Oblong, Decatur Lutheran and Sangamon Valley will join the Little Okaw Valley Conference in Illinois.

The league will have 10 football-playing members, with Martinsville having the smallest enrollment.

• Recent Indianapolis North Central grad Nariah Taylor says she willl play basketball at Georgia Tech. She originally signed with Auburn but changed schools when Auburn changed coaches.

Taylor was an Indiana All-Star and helped the Panthers win the 4A title in the state finals at Terre Haute .

• Jamie Moyer has been released by the Baltimore Orioles. He began the season with Colorado and became the oldest pitcher to win a game at 49 before being let go by the Rockies.

• Avon graduate Patrick Rodgers is one of the top-ranked amateurs after earning Pac-12 freshman honors at Stanford. He played in his first PGA event last week in Connecticut.

He did not make the cut after shooting 72 and 73, five shots off the cut line of even par.

• Rod Smith, a graduate of Edgewood, is the new men’s basketball coach at Ohio University. He has been an assistant at Creighton.

• Maverick Morgan, a 6-foot-10 player in Ohio, says he will be part of the Class of 2013 at Illinois.

• Congrats to Derek Andre of Sullivan for being named to the golf academic all-state team.
