Tom Reck: Pair with ISU ties honored by peers

TERRE HAUTE — Congratulations to Indiana State University coaches — past and present.

Teri Moren was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame last week — a fact reported last fall.

Moren was a standout player at Seymour High School and Purdue University, setting records at both schools and being named to the Indiana All-Star team her senior year at Seymour.

After serving as an assistant coach, Moren was the head coach at the University of Indianapolis for seven seasons and is in her fifth season at ISU.

Roger Counsil was the gymnastics coach at ISU for 17 seasons and was the coach of the only team to win an NCAA championship. The Sycamores tied Oklahoma for the title in 1977 spearheaded by the efforts of Olympian and All-American Kurt Thomas.

Counsil served as executive director of the U.S. Gymnastics Federation after leaving ISU.

He will be inducted into the Indiana Gymnastics Hall of Fame in July and as a World Acrobatics Society Legend in September.

Congrats again to both Teri and Roger.

And a personal belated congratulations to Andy Amey for his induction into the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportcasters Hall of Fame.

As noted by others, the honor was long overdue.

He’s been an MVP on the sports staff for a long time.

n Tom-Cattin’ It — Good weather prevailed for golf action last week, including the Bob Arnett Invitational for high school teams, the ISU Football Outing and a two-man scramble at Forest Park.

Hopefully, weather will be good again for golf and other activities this weekend with a two-man scramble slated at Geneva Hills.

In the meantime, rain is likely to rain on parades and sports action much of the week.

n St. Louis defeated Pittsburgh on Sunday to wind up their three-game series. Adam Wainwright worked eight innings and became the first pitcher in the big leagues to win five games.

My Bucs, meanwhile, are struggling after opening the season against 26 straight NL Central Division opponents and losing most of the close games. Pitching has been great but the offense has been lacking.

n Donald Sterling, owner of the LA Clippers, stirred up tons on controversy with some comments he made and that were released by his girlfriend.

n The Kentucky Derby will be run this weekend. One of the pre-race favorites is Danza, owned by television personality Tony Danza.

Other early favorites are California Chrome and Wicked Strong. California Chrome was a runaway winner in the Santa Anita Derby.

n Albert Pujols recently hit his 500th homer for the Los Angeles Angels. He also has a lifetime batting average of better than .320 and will go down in history as one of the greatest to play the game.

n Practice begins May 11 for the Indianapolis 500 following the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis on the IMS road course on May 10. At this time, 33 cars have not been confirmed for the 500.
