RAMBLIN’ RECK: Congratulations for athletes near and far

TERRE HAUTE — Congrats and a tip of the cap to the following:

• Terre Haute North golfers Ryan Baker and Andrew Behnke for tying for third in the Boys Team Championship played Monday, shooting par-71 at Dye’s Walk Country Club

And to Victoria National Pro David Von Hoffman and assistant Matt Cain for taking second in the pro-assistant tournament played at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club in Batesville where the host team won.

Cain is a former Terre Haute North golfer.

• Dan Zuerner for winning a state sporting clays championship in the competition at Indian Creek Shooting Range in Georgetown.

And to Kelvin Root who was a class winner.

• Jeff Gordon for finally winning a Sprint Cup race Sunday even though it was rain-shortened.

Gordon, who turned 41 this month, now has a chance to make the Chase again and win another championship.

Tom-Cattin’ It — University of Illinois football fans will have a chance to meet players and get autographs from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Stadium. They’ll have a chance to walk on the new turf on the field. … One Indianapolis Star writer recently tabbed the Top 10 Hoosier feats in the Olympic Games. He included Terre Haute’s Greg Bell winning the long jump. Could not agree more. … Brown County has a girls golf team this season and will compete in the Western Indiana Conference match to be played Aug. 25 at Idle Creek. Cathy Harbin played with the Brown County boys team in the 1980s and was good enough to get a golf scholarship at Indiana State. She now is an executive in the sport.

Purdue’s men’s basketball team will play its first game in a tour of Italy on Thursday. … A.J. Burnett of Pittsburgh had a no-hitter going against the Chicago Cubs until it was broken up in the eighth inning. The Cubs last were no-hit on Sept. 9, 1965, by Sandy Koufax, a string of 7,441 games as of that Cubs-Pirates game. … Ryan Dempster would have pitched against the Bucs last week but was traded to Texas, where he gave up eight runs in 4 2/3 innings in his first game with the Rangers. … Former Chicago Cub Mark Prior last pitched in the major leagues in August of 2006. He’s now with Class AAA Pawtucket and working in relief.

Former Indiana and Alabama-Birmingham basketball coach Mike Davis has been named interim coach at Texas Southern. … Lebron James has been a key player in the success of the U.S. team in the Olympics. He had six points and five assists in the 156-73 victory over Nigeria but had big points in the final five minutes to rally the Americans past Lithuania. … Garrett Reid, oldest son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, was found dead in a dormitory room at the team’s training site (Lehigh University) on Sunday. … It was good to see New Orleans win the first NFL preseason game against Arizona after all the problems the team has had in the past year. Replacement officials worked the game since regular officials are locked out in a labor dispute.
