Ramblin’ Reck: Irish still alive in women’s tourney

TERRE HAUTE — The college basketball season is at an end, while some of the National Basketball Association teams still could be playing late in May.

Connecticut and Notre Dame vie for the NCAA women’s championship tonight. It should be a dandy — both teams are unbeaten and ranked 1-2 in the final poll.

ND’s Muffet McGraw was voted Coach of the Year and would like to add the 2013-14 title to her résumé.

Rutgers won the Women’s NIT, edging UTEP in the final game 56-54.

Kentucky and Connecticut, of course, met Monday night for the NCAA men’s title — a 7 and an 8 seed going for the championship. NCAA selection committee chairman Ron Wellman said it showed the parity of college basketball.

With Saturday’s games not being shown on a regular network station, television ratings were down for the semifinal action, as Kentucky continued to win in the final seconds.

In the NBA, teams have a few regular-season games left on the schedule before the postseason begins, and the Indiana Pacers continue to not look good. They had a franchise-low 23 points in the first half in Sunday’s 107-88 loss to Atlanta.

Kevin Durant of Oklahoma City has tied and passed an old Michael Jordan mark. He has scored 25 points or better in 41 consecutive games. M.J. did it for 40 in a row.

And J.R. Smith of the New York Knicks established a league mark with 21 3-point attempts. He made 10.

Tom-Cattin’ It — Derek Jeter got his 3,320th hit Sunday for the New York Yankees, putting him eighth on the career hit list. Carl Yastrzemski is next at 3,419.

With Tiger Woods out of the lineup, there’s a good chance some player competing in the Masters for the first time could win it.

Jake Martin, the baseball coach at DePauw, has recorded his 100th victory.

Teams coached by Ron Albers, the tennis coach at Vincennes University, have won 700 matches in his 34 years at the school.

Ethan Whitson of Northview will play college basketball at Franklin College. He averaged just over 14 points and 4.74 rebounds per game his senior season.

Clint Hurdle has signed a contract extension to manage the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Bucs are off to a 4-2 start and open a series with the Chicago Cubs today.

Jablil Okafur has been named Illinois Mr. Basketball. He led Young to the Class 4A title.

Kentucky lost to No. 12 Florida in college baseball, rallying from a 9-0 deficit before losing 11-10. A.J. Reed got his 12th homer of the season in that game.
