Ramblin’ Reck: College basketball season races start to get serious

TERRE HAUTE — The preliminaries are over and college conference teams start playing each other tonight with league titles and possible NCAA berths on the line.

Indiana State had a nice win over Belmont last week and will take momentum into its first Missouri Valley Conference game, welcoming Loyola of Chicago to the Valley on New Year's Day in Hulman Center.

Valley teams have good numbers in the Sagarin ratings.

Wichita State has been ranked in the Top 10 or 15 of the national polls all season and is No. 11 in last week's Sagarin list. ISU is next at 83 followed by Missouri State 100, Drake 106, Northern Iowa 120 (before beating No. 7 Iowa), Illinois State 167, Evansville 192, Southern Illinois 228, Bradley 238 and Loyola 278.

Indiana is on the road for its Big Ten opener, playing at Illinois this afternoon.

The Illini are 43rd in the list and IU is 56. Some other numbers: Ohio State 5, Wisconsin 6, Iowa 7, Michigan State 8, Michigan 23, Minnesota 41, Notre Dame 59, Penn State 81, Purdue 84, Belmont 98, Ball State 281 and Eastern Illinois 319.

Purdue is at home for its conference opener, facing Ohio State this afternoon.

ISU is at Evansville for its second Valley game on Saturday while IU is at home to Michigan State the same day and Purdue goes to Minnesota on Sunday.

• Former ISU basketball coach Royce Waltman is recovering from recent surgery and he likely will not return to his post as IU color man on the radio this season but hopes to be back next year. Royce can use our prayers.

• Brooke Cundiff of South Putnam will play softball at Anderson University. She was a player on two state-championship teams.

• Andy Granatelli has died at 90. He was one of the most popular and colorful car owners in Indy 500 history. Mario Andretti won in one of his cars and Gordon Johncock also won once in a Granatelli entry.

• Terre Haute North's girls basketball team will return to action on Saturday but Layne Curley will not be in the lineup. The senior sparkplug incurred a broken hand in the team's last game and will miss six to eight weeks.
