Ramblin' Reck: Broncos QB Manning gets early accolade

TERRE HAUTE — The National Football League season has not ended but one of the top players has received a top honor.

Denver quarterback Peyton Manning has been named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated. With the great season he has had, he should be a top candidate for NFL Player of the Year.

In addition to what he makes for playing football, it is estimated that Manning makes $13 million in endorsements.

His Broncos and Kansas City are tied for first in the AFC West with 11-3 marks after the Broncos lost to San Diego on Thursday and the Chiefs racked up 56 points in beating Oakland on Sunday.

Indianapolis is the AFC South champ and still could be the No. 2 seed for the playoffs.

Other playoff positions still are up in the air as a result of New Orleans losing to St. Louis and Dallas blowing a 23-point lead in losing to Green Bay while Philadelphia was routed by Minnesota.

One of the teams that will not have a winning season in the NFC is New York. The Giants were assured of a losing mark after losing to Seattle 21-0. Eli Manning had five interceptions.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Jeff Carmichael has retired from coaching. He has coached seven different sports in 32 years of coaching and was the volleyball coach at Edgewood the past three years.

n Indiana’s women’s basketball team is 11-0 after defeating IUPUI 51-45 at IUPUI. Butler’s women are 5-5 after defeating Northern Kentucky 53-47.

The Kentucky women’s team also is 11-0 following its 73-56 victory over East Tennessee State, now 2-6. ISU will play at ETS on Wednesday.

• Junior receiver Cody Latimer is the MVP of the IU football team.

• Pat Echeverria has been named the new football coach at Zionsville High School. He led Eastern Hancock to a 14-1 mark and to the Class A runner-up finish last season.

Echeverria replaces longtime coach Larry McWhorter, who will coach the new football team at Covenant Christian.

• Keith Hatfield is the new baseball coach at Center Grove. He formerly coached Roncalli and led the Rebels to the Class 4A title game in 2012. He replaces Dave Gandolph, who is retiring after serving as the CG coach since 1981.

• Changes are being made in the North Central Conference. Lafayette Jeff had left the league and is rejoining.

New members are Harrison (West Lafayette) and McCutcheon from the Hoosier Crossroads Conference, which is also where Jeff had been recently.

• NBA officials were busy in the first month of the season, issuing 21 fines and suspensions worth more than $602,000 in November.

The Indiana Pacers continue to win and have a big game at Miami on Wednesday.
