Ramblin’ Reck: College football race should clear up this week

TERRE HAUTE — We should have a better idea of which teams are best in college football after games this week with top teams meeting their biggest rivals.

No. 1 Alabama is on the road to play Auburn, No. 4 in the BCS standings, while No. 2 Florida State is at Florida and No. 3 Ohio State is at Michigan.

Auburn takes a 10-1 mark into the Iron Bowl contest and has won seven games in a row. Alabama has won four of the last five games in the series.

Florida State may not have much trouble with the Gators but the Buckeyes figure to face a challenge against the Wolverines.

Columbia, meanwhile, has concluded an 0-10 campaign, losing to Brown 48-7 in the last game. The Lions were outscored 402-73 and gave up more than 50 points four times.

Franklin won its first game in the NCAA Division III playoffs, beating Washington of St. Louis 17-10 with a great rally and will be at Wisconsin-Whitewater this week.

Eastern Illinois, Butler and two Missouri Valley Football Conference teams are in the FCS playoffs. South Dakota State is at Northern Arizona and Butler is at home to Tennessee State this week while EIU and North Dakota State got first-round byes.

West Vigo and Terre Haute South also have home games tonight to close out pre-Thanksgiving action. The Braves face Sullivan and the Vikings meet South Putnam.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Kaydie Grooms of Marshall will play college basketball at Southern Indiana. The senior hopes to conclude her high school career with a sectional championship for the Lions.

n Indiana University football fans will be glad to know that the Hoosiers don’t play Wisconsin again until 2017. Saturday’s Old Oaken Bucket game with Purdue should be interesting. IU should be favored going into the contest.

• Sullivan grad Christina Haag earned second-team honors in soccer with Oakland City in the Independent Collegiate Athletic Association.

• One interesting college basketball score from the weekend was North Carolina 93, Louisville 84. Indiana State fans will recall that UNC lost to Belmont.

• IUPUI won the Summit League tournament title in volleyball to earn its first appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament.

• Indianapolis Washington High School will retire basketball jerseys worn by Darrin Fitzgerald and John Sherman Williams. Williams played for ISU and is in its Athletics Hall of Fame.

• Big news in the NBA on Monday was that Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls is out for the rest the season after incurring knee injury. He missed last season due to the same reason.

• Indianapolis North Central football coach Keith Shelton has resigned. He coached the Panthers five years.
