RAMBLIN' RECK: Despite weather, let’s still get a crowd at tonight’s game

TERRE HAUTE — If you’ve listened to any weather forecasts at all on Monday, you know bad weather could be headed here today and Wednesday. That’s not good for lots of reasons, particularly because ice is mentioned. It’s not good for Sycamore Pride Day at Indiana State.

The Sycamores meet Wichita State in men’s basketball tonight. It’s a big game for the Sycamores as they attempt to reverse a three-game losing streak.

Fans and students have been great with their support this season and probably helped the team to win with the enthusiasm shown in Hulman Center.

Thanks to the generosity of the law firm of Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos and Newlin, those fans without season tickets can basically watch the game for free. All that is needed for a ticket is an item of canned food.

We were going to push for the biggest crowd of the season, but that figure may not be easy to reach tonight if the worst weather scenario prevails.

What the heck, we’ll push for it anyway.

• Ben Davis rolls — Pairings were made for the Indiana high school girls basketball tournament to be played next week.

The two-time defending champ in Class 4A is Ben Davis, which quietly is rolling up a record that may not be equaled.

The Giants defeated Carmel last week 58-45 for their 78th victory in a row. That’s amazing.

Ben Davis was slated to play Avon on Monday and will close the regular season against Brebeuf.

• Giants first in something else, too — The Indiana High School Athletic Association released enrollment rankings Monday and will have classifications for sports later in the week.

Ben Davis is No. 1 in the enrollment figures, folllowed by fellow Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference schools Carmel, Warren Central and North Central.

Terre Haute North is 20th and Terre Haute South is 44th.

Some other schools and their ranks: Northview, 97; Owen Valley, 120; Vincennes Lincoln, 143; West Vigo, 147; South Vermillion, 197; and Sullivan, 210.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Erica Moore has graduated from Indiana State but continues to compete in track while working on her master’s degree at Tennessee.

We’ve had some of her results — winning results.

She’s working out with J.J. Clark and won the 400 in the Kentucky Invitational last month, defeating an Olympian in the process.

• Some great times were run in men’s track during the weekend, including four sub-four-minute miles.

Indiana sophomore Andrew Bayer had one of them, doing it in 3 minutes, 57.5 seconds, to edge Ross Millington by two seconds.

Earlier, Zach Mayhew of IU and Terre Haute North ran an 8:05.56 time in the 3,000. That time was good enough for fifth in the country at the time.

In ISU track, fellow Dubois grad Dustin Betz ran a fine mile for the Sycamores over the weekend. Gotta get a plug in for the Jeeps when I can.

• George Crowe of Franklin was the first Mr. Indiana Basketball pick, in 1939. He died last week at 89.

He competed in pro baseball and basketball following his high school days.

• Chad Collins is off to a mixed start on the PGA Tour. The ace from Cloverdale cashed in the first event but had a bad second round last week and did not make the cut for the Farmers Insurance Open.

• Most folks will agree that Aaron Rodgers is a big reason the Green Bay Packers are in the Super Bowl and the early pick to win.

Rodgers grew up in California and was not good enough in high school to be recruited by top schools. He went to junior college and then earned a scholarship to California and was the No. 24 pick on the first round of the 2005 NFL draft.

Do we think the Pack are Back and will beat the Steelers? Yes. The Pack are our Pick.
