RAMBLIN' RECK: Here’s to hoping for more Hoosier magic

TERRE HAUTE — Another NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship is history and fans already are talking about next season.

Indiana’s Hoosiers were back in The Big Dance and gave Kentucky all it wanted before losing.

That’s one reason the Hoosiers are being tabbed to be in the top five of the 2012-13 preseason poll, possibly No. 1. Cody Zeller is back and a strong nucleus to go along with some blue-chip recruits.

Louisville is another team being mentioned for No. 1. The Cardinals got to the Final Four before losing to Kentucky and have a strong nucleus back.

And, of course, Kentucky will be right up there with John Calipari again filling holes left by his one-and-done players with more recruits who likely won’t stay more than a year or two.

The television ratings for the Final Four were the best since 2005 while ratings were down for some of the earlier games in the tournament.

One team that may not be in the tournament next year is Connecticut, which lost its appeal for a waiver of academic requirements. Other schools could be affected by the requirement.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Derek Andre has kept busy with athletics at Sullivan High School and plans to continue competition in college.

He says he is going to Wabash and will be a kicker on the football roster.

• Drake has granted its release to sophomore Rayvonte Rice to transfer. He ranked third in Missouri Valley Conference scoring with his 16.8-point average and was a second-team all-conference pick.

• Central Michigan has hired former Drake coach Keano Davis, who earned national honors at the school before going to Providence.

Bennie Seltzer, who has been an assistant for four years at IU, has been named the new coach at Samford.

• The Indiana High School Athletic Association has tabled a proposal to make football postseason changes, saying more facts are needed. One change would add a sixth class.

• Former Indiana State baseball players are doing all right in the majors.

Clint Barmes ranks second on Pittsburgh’s payroll with $5.4 million while Joe Thatcher makes $700,000 according to published reports.

• Mike Bergum is the new athletic director at Earlham College. He has been the AD at New Castle High School.

• In the final USA Today prep boys basketball poll, Carmel was seventh in the Midwest Region.

• Words for the wise — To close out this column, some words of wisdom thanks to the person who regularly sends them our way.

• “Work Hard. Be Nice. Be Honest.”

• “It is nice to be important but more important to be nice.”

• “It is your attitude and not your aptitude that determines your altitude.”

• “You don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression . . . A smile increases your face value.”

• “Love is not blind — it just doesn’t tell all it sees . . . Love does not make the world go around — it makes the ride worthwhile.”

• “It is never wrong to do what is right.”

More later.
