Ramblin' Reck: What a weekend for Tom Jones, Miami Dolphins

It was a nice weekend for the Americans and Tom Jones in golf and for the Miami Dolphins in football.

The U.S. won the Ryder Cup matches for the first time since 1999 with success at Valhalla in Louisville. And we did it without Tiger Woods.

Jones, meanwhile, won the WTHI Men’s City Championship for the seventh time and for the first time since 2000 with a 7-under-par 209 score. Troy Farris was runnerup for the fifth time.

Both of the golfers intend to play in the Forest Park Men’s Club two-man best-ball event this weekend. It should have another big field.

Two events left on the golf card after that are the Interclub match and Geneva Hills two-man event in October.

Terre Haute North and South and Northview girls golf teams and individuals from the area will vie for honors in the regional at Martinsville.

It has to be one of the roughest regionals in the state, with several ranked teams in the field.

Finally, New England was beaten by the Miami Dolphins in the NFL on Sunday as the number of unbeaten teams was reduced to six and making lots of fans — in this part of the country anyway — very happy.

Arizona and Green Bay also both lost and now are 2-1 while Indianapolis and Chicago are 1-2.

Baltimore is one of the undefeated teams. Lest ye forget, the Ravens are coached this year by former Indiana assistant John Harbaugh and Cam Cameron is on the staff.

The Ravens meet Pittsburgh next Monday. Pittsburgh lost the battle of Pennsylvania to the Eagles 15-6.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Purdue has gotten its second commitment for the 2010 class in men’s basketball.

Terone Johnson, 6-foot-2 guard at North Central, says he will sign with the Boilermakers. He averaged 18 points per game last season.

Lawrence North’s 6-9 senior center Stephan Van Treese has given his commitment to Louisville and Rick Pitino. The big man averaged 12 points and 11 rebounds as a junior.

Purdue’s basketball teams will participate in Mackey Madness on Oct.17 and its volleyball team will meet Wisconsin prior to the basketball exhibition.

The Big Ten Network will carry the Purdue-Indiana State game.

• Northwestern is off to a 4-0 start in college football but did not exactly pack them in for its game with state rival Southern Illinois when 19,062 were in the stands.

• Olympians Shalane Flanagan and Anthony Famiglietti won U.S. road running titles Sunday at Providence, R.I. Flanagan’s time was 15 minutes, 28 seconds.

She is the daughter of Indiana State All-American Cheryl Bridges.

• High school volleyball teams in the area are having banner seasons.

Northview and Owen Valley both were undefeated going into Monday matches. The 15-0 Patriots had lost just one game.

North Central and Sullivan both have top marks. The Thunderbirds have already won twice as many matches as last year.

• Some favorites of fans in this area are on the ballot for the veterans committe to vote on for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Three of the names on it are Hoosier Gil Hodges, who could be elected as player or manager; Ron Santo of Chicago; and Joe Torre, who apparently was not included in a special presentation put on by the New York Yankees for their final game in the old Yankee Stadium.

Derek Jeter established a record last week that will last for the ages. He broke Lou Gehrig’s mark of 1,269 hits — the most for any player in Yankee Stadium until last week.

• The number of unbeaten teams was reduced in the area with Union and South Vermillion losing for the first time, but Casey, Rockville and Linton continue to roll.

South Vermillion takes on Rockville this week and Union has undefeated North Knox for its homecoming game to be played Saturday afternoon.

• Murray State football coach Matt Griffin had to sit out last week’s game after being reprimanded for comments made following his team’s 42-23 defeat by Illinois State.

Illinois State, by the way, lost to Eastern Illinois in a big rivalry game last week.
