Ramblin' Reck: Coaching vacancies get scarce as school looms

TERRE HAUTE — More coaching vacancies have been filled at high schools in the area with the start of school looming in about a month.

As reported in Monday’s newspaper, Joe Boehler was expected to be named the new boys basketball coach at West Vigo on Monday. He played at Terre Haute North and has been an assistant at the school.

Riverton Parke has named two assistant coaches to coach the Panthers’ basketball teams.

Monty Kirk will be the boys coach, succeeding Matt Wadsworth who resigned to be coach at North Posey.

Charlie Martin, the athletic director, said a junior varsity coach could be named this week (may have update on this matter later).

Josh Douglas will be the girls coach. Former West Vigo player Sarah Norton will be the junior varsity coach. She’s married to Dane Norton, another former player for the Vikings.

Steve Duzan recently resigned as the football coach and athletic director at Marshall High School in Illinois and has been named athletics academic coordinator at Indiana State University.

Todd Evers, a former assistant, is the new football coach at Marshall which again will open the season against rival Casey.

Pete Manuel is the new athletic director.

In Evansville, Shane Burkhart has been hired as the new boys basketball coach at Bosse. He played for Marion High School and has been an assistant at the school.

He succeeds Jeff Hein, the new coach at Vincennes Lincoln.

Girls golf practice begins in August and the first matches will follow shortly after the first official day of practice.

• Jennings on bench — Don Jennings was in a baseball dugout serving as coach for the first time in 22 years on Saturday, serving as honorary coach for the South in the all-star series at Notre Dame. He also threw out the first pitch.

He served in that position for the first game, the only one the South won in the series, prevailing 16-8.

Jennings was the baseball coach at Garfield for 10 years and at North for 15 before retiring.

He was the South coach in 1983 and the South won that series. He thus is 2-0 in the series. He also was an assistant coach in 1986 at Kokomo.

South coach Kyle Kraemer, who played for Terre Haute South and was an assistant for the South All-Star team this year, was on the South roster that year and Jennings says he hit two homers in the action at Kokomo.
