Cassell takes South to third state finals in five years

Terre Haute South’s boys high school golf team begins play today in the state finals at The Legends of Indiana Course near Franklin.

Chris Cassell has been coaching the Braves for five years and this year’s team is the third to make the trip to the Franklin course for the finals.

Two years ago, the Braves finished second in the state.

Phillip Myers was a sophomore on that team and will be one of two seniors teeing off today. Others in the South lineup include freshman Thomas Goss, senior Ian White and junior Zach Hosking. Freshman Shelby Stewart won the fifth spot with his play in practice rounds Friday and Monday.

The Braves were able to practice Monday morning at The Legends, and Cassell reported later in the day that one hole adjustment will have to be made to accommodate today’s play. Other than that, however, the tournament remains on schedule despite a line of storms that went through Marion County later Monday.

South won the sectional at Rolling Meadows and took second in the regional at Country Oaks to begin postseason play.

Goss was medalist in the sectional with 69 and Myers took the same honor in the regional with 73 on a windy day.

The Braves will need to be in the top nine or be within 12 shots of the leaders today to advance to the final round on Wednesday.

South won four tournaments this season, including the Metropolitan Interscholastic Confence title, and placed no worse than fifth in a 20-team event, competing in tournaments about every weekend of the regular season.

The Braves have been ranked much of the year and were ninth in the final poll. Three other MIC teams were in the final top 20, but Center Grove is the only other one to make it to the finals.

A year ago, Carmel took second in the state and Indianapolis North Central was a top finisher.

• Top honor for Murphy — Megan Murphy of Casey has gained numerous honors in Illinois high school softball in her stellar career at the school and has received another one in the sport.

The infielder earned a spot on the second team of the all-class all-state team chosen by The Chicago Tribune.

No other player from this part of the state was listed on the honor softball team or the all-state baseball list.

Murphy has signed to play college softball at the University of Illinois.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Felisha Johnson of Lawrence North is one of the recruits in track and field for Indiana State. She also is a member of the Indiana All-Stars in basketball and has been recognized as one of the Marion County athletes of the year by The Indianapolis Star.

Garrett Butcher of Edgewood is on the Indiana All-Star boys team. He was identified as Butler in a full-page promo in the newspaper for Friday’s game at Indy.

n We mentioned an ISU golf outing to be played at the Sullivan Elks last week. The new date for The Jim Hartman Open — named in honor of the former Sullivan coach and teacher and ISU alum — is June 19, not June 12 as reported last week.
