As weather heats up, prep slate cooling down

By Tom Reck
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE The high school sports season began in August for girls golf teams and has ended for all but a few girls and boys teams in the area in Indiana and Illinois.

Five baseball teams won sectional titles last week and Terre Haute South, Shakamak, Rockville, Eastern and West Vigo play for regional titles tonight with the winners advancing to the semistates slated Saturday. State championship games will be played next week.

Most of the boys golf teams competed for sectional honors Monday, with three teams and three teams advancing to regionals later in the week. Three teams and three individuals from the regionals will vie for state honors next week. Turkey Run placed second in the Crawfordsville Sectional and will be in the regional at Lafayette along with South Vermillion Brandon Bekkering, an individual qualifier.

Three softball teams from the area competed for regional honors, with North Central winning one game before losing to Indianapolis Lutheran. North Vermillion lost to Luthern in the first round.

In other games involving sectional champs from the area, Martinsville beat Castle but lost to East Central in 4A regional title play; Brownstown Central nipped Bloomfield 2-1 in 10 innings and lost to South Spencer in 2A action; and Gibson Southern bested Edgewood 5-1 and met Jasper in a rain-delayed 3A regional championship game.

Park Tudor won another girls tennis championship, defeating Munster 4-1 in the finals and Jasper 4-1 in the semifinals. Munster stopped Zionsville 3-2, and Zionsville defeated Jasper 3-2 in the consolation match.

Good luck to all the teams and individuals this week.

• Changes — Two men who served as sports information directors at Indiana State have new jobs.

Ed McKee has been at George Washington University for 22 years, working in media relations. He now is director of athletic development for the school.

He and Linda recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

Kent Johnson came to ISU from Texas and is going back to the state as athletic media relations director at West Texas A&M, which used to be West Texas State and a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Misty Murphy is the new women’s basketball coach at the University of Evansville. She has been an assistant at Rice and formerly coached on the junior college level, compiling a mark of 108-65.

Dave Seifert has resigned as the baseball coach at the University of Evansville. His teams were 35-23 and 14-20 in his two years as coach.

• On the links — Better weather may have had something to do with it but a record 49 players were in “the hunt” played Saturday at Hulman Links.

Several men from the Valley will be in Illinois this week for the Lawrenceville Open. Players from the area often have won this event in the past.

ISU scholarship golf outings are scheduled for the Sullivan Elks on June 12 and at Geneva Hills on June 18. Players may call (800) 258-6478 for information or to enter.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Doug Collins once coached the Chicago Bulls and may be the coach again. The former Illinois State standout has been working in television.

n Scott Martin says he will continue his college basketball at Notre Dame. The freshman averaged 8.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists for Purdue last year.

• Grier Werner has coached his last baseball game at Bloomington South. He retired after coaching the Panthers 27 years.

• Wichita State and Michigan were the only baseball teams picked from the Missouri Valley and Big Ten, respectively, for the NCAA tournament. Michigan was eliminated Sunday, while Wichita State advanced to its second-straight Super Regional with an 11-7 come from behind win over Oklahoma State in 10 innings.

Gene Stephenson of WSU needs less than 10 wins to become the all-time winningest coach in college baseball.
