Ramblin' Reck: Trio of North grads doing big things at collegiate level

By Tom Reck
Tribune-Star Correspondent

TERRE HAUTE Terre Haute North graduates set some records in weekend collegiate action in two sports.

• Kylie Hutson set an Indiana State and Missouri Valley Conference record in the MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Southern Illinois.

She eclipsed both old marks by going 14 feet, 1 and 1/4 inches in the pole vault as she won her fourth conference championship in the sport, one week after a stellar effort in miserable weather conditions in another meet.

Hutson moved to fourth on the national list for vaulters with her record-breaking vault and shared most outstanding field athlete honors with Brittany Riley of SIU.

Erica Moore of Sullivan was another top performer for the women’s team in the meet as both athletes continue to have superb spring seasons in their sport.

• Josh Phegley had set records in baseball at Indiana University earlier in the season and added another to his list on Saturday when he broke the old RBI mark of 42 for Big Ten Conference games.

Phegley helped IU qualify for the Big Ten baseball tournament and is a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award.

Another North grad, John Cummins, has been a leader for the Purdue team that also is in the six-team event.

Play begins in the tournament Wednesday with Illinois facing Ohio State and IU playing Penn State. Top seeds Michigan and Purdue have byes and will meet first-round winners Thursday.

• Former Indiana State baseball player Clint Barmes did not set a record but continued to swing a hot bat for Colorado.

He homered and singled Sunday against Minnesota to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and hike his average to .357.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Jeff Hein was expected to be named the new boys basketball coach at Vincennes Lincoln.

He has compiled a 172-139 record at four schools, including North Central and Evansville Bosse where he went 55-19.

Former IU player Greg Graham was named boys basketball coach at Warren Central and Michael Brooks is the new girls basketball coach at the school.

John Albers has been hired as the girls basketball coach at Lawrence Central. He formerly had been an assistant at the school and had been coaching at Avon.

Mark Reddy is the new football coach at Eastern Hancock. He succeeds Kyle Johnson, who had a 63-51 mark in 10 seasons.

• Vincennes University is looking for a new men’s basketball coach.

Everick Sullivan resigned to become an assistant at Eastern Kentucky. He was 79-20 in three years at VU.

Stacey Phillips has resigned as the softball coach at IU. She had an 80-135-1 record at the school.

• Former Sullivan baseball players have earned all-conference honors in baseball.

Shane Noble was a Great Lakes Valley Conference pick at Bellarmine and Korey Grow earned Mid-Central Conference honors at Huntington.
