RONN MOTT: Observations of spring

---- — I turned on the TV last week, got focused on a wrestling match and a basketball game broke out. My goodness, what a rough game with bodies strewn all over the floor. If you were going to contest a shot, you would have to hit him hard, and the rules must have changed because I didn’t recognize any of the foul calls.

I’m sorry to report to those of us who love this game … it has changed. You get cleaner basketball on a playground in the Bronx than you do with the Zebras and the whistles. It was a mess. Next it will be like hockey and they will allow clubs to hit people with.

I blame this on the NBA. They’ve taken the street game and put players in fancy uniforms and shoes, and people pay to see it. There was a lot of talent on display in the Final Four last week, but there were also a lot of bone-crushing fouls that were never called. The game used to be one of skill and finesse and now it’s just brute force. It’s going to come down to “shoot if you dare.”

I know now that it is spring because the carpet of tiny flowers that blanket the ground in Collett Park are there. Anyone who lives near the Park and sees it every day knows it isn’t the calendar that tells us when spring is here. Driving north the other day on U.S. 41 I noticed the dogwoods and other blooming trees. So in spite of the surprising cool spring, compared to last year, the lovely flowers let me know that spring is actually here.

My cats just love it. They’re spending more time outdoors (sleeping on top of my car) and all three of them like the warm weather. Stretching out on sun-heated sidewalk, chasing birds and squirrels (they never catch the squirrels), and in general enjoying the change in climate. I’m not sure they understand it, but I don’t understand it either. For instance, last year it was in the 80s in March and this year we’re having a very cool spring.

Also this spring, I’m finding myself behind a microphone again. I’ll be on WAXI doing an interview information program called “Focus on the Community.” More on this later.
