RONN MOTT: Who cares?

I don’t get it. I’m sorry, but I just don’t get it. Like most people in the media, I’ve been tracking, in a rather haphazard way, Kim Kardashian. Let’s see if I have this right.

Even with all of her former rapper boyfriends, she doesn’t have a hit song. She hasn’t been a star of any Broadway musical play or review. She has not sent patrons running to the box office to see her latest film. And, yet, here she is. Almost everywhere anyone can be, there is Kim Kardashian. She has a television show with her sisters and her mother called simply, “The Kardashians.” I have avoided it. And unless they can produce the Second Coming in their living room, I will continue to avoid it.

I think I last wrote a commentary on the radio approximately four years ago. It was about her upcoming marriage to an almost seven-footer who plays basketball in the NBA. For a guy as big as he is, he had the appearance of being led around on a chain (of course, that’s exactly what it was and what all of us learned later). The wedding cost nearly $10 million. Every commercial hook you can put into a wedding, Kim had in hers. The marriage, of course, was a sham. It lasted 72 days. The bridegroom sued her on some charge and it did not end until a few hours before she had this current child.

It wouldn’t be unusual for an ordinary guy to feel kind of stupid. Certainly, in my own life, I’ve had a few of these kinds of “My God, why did I do this” moments, but when you’re seven feet tall there’s no place to run and hide. Kim became famous, or infamous, by having a sex act videotaped and it was put on the Internet where it went viral. (Do you think her little girl will see this one of these days and ask what her mother was doing?)

She and Kanye West have a little girl and they named her North West. There was a stir about that not being a proper name for a little girl. Gee, with all the stuff flying around about her mother, her name will certainly be the least of all her problems.

My Quaker grandmother used to say, “Fools’ names and fools’ faces are always seen in public places.” If Grandma hadn’t died in the 1950s, Kim Kardashian’s entire life would most likely have given her a stroke.

So, I fail to “get it,” the “it” being the Kim Kardashians of the world. As far as Kim, her lifestyle and her lack of any kind of moral judgment is concerned, I believe we need Clark Gable slamming the door in her face and saying as he did in “Gone With The Wind,” “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
