RONN MOTT: A Poker Tell

In the game of Poker when it gets down to the nitty-gritty when you’re eager to play or fold, having a “tell” is the last thing you want to have.

A “tell” is something you do that tips your hand and you are probably not aware of it, but a sharp card player will catch on and take advantage. Of course, after recognizing your “tell,” he will probably end up taking your money in that particular bet.

It seems by asking Congress for permission to strike Syria with missiles from air, as well as sea, the president has shown his “tell.” Syria, in this case the enemy, knows we are coming. They have ample time to hide their chemical weapons supplies, to protect their air force and other strategic targets. By allowing Congress to talk about it, fume about it, put themselves on CNN about it, we have not only shown our “tell,” but have displayed it in bright, neon lights.

President Obama has done everything but stood on his head and clicked his heels to the Star Spangled Banner in attempts to get Congress to agree on something, or anything. He has failed. This Congress has failed to back up their leadership and considers compromise to be treacherous. This Congress will go down in history as the worst that has ever been.

I said, in one of these things I write, that Congress will turn down the president’s request for a “yes” vote enabling him to strike certain targets in Syria. These so-called “patriots” will show their true colors and it will have absolutely nothing to do with patriotism.

If I were a betting man, I would bet the president not only fails but fails miserably. We went to war in Iraq on the fear there were weapons of mass destruction. There were none. Thousands of lives and about a trillion dollars later, the religious differences in Iraq are still getting people killed. The sight of small children dying on camera and the tally of more than 400 dead children would have made most Americans angry and a want to do something. I guess the so-called “patriots” in Congress don’t feel the way about it as I do.

I don’t think the world will come to an end if we do not take revenge on those who feel secure enough to kill children, but the stain on the American Congress is there. There will be excuses made … no more Mideast entanglements, no more boots on the ground, and no more wars in that part of the world’s sand pits. But if I were Israel, I wouldn’t depend too heavily on these Americans because it looks as if they have turned tail and run away from their responsibility to not only the citizens of our country, but the world.
