Let’s stop giving them our votes

First they came for the public schools, and we did not speak out. They said the funding is excessive and the teachers are failures. Achievement was assessed politically, and all was good.

Then they came for the unions. They said the unions steal the rights of Hoosiers to work and stand in the way of new jobs. Nobody noticed that household incomes fell, and all was good.

Then they came for the rights of gays and lesbians. They said gay rights suppress religious liberty and are abominations for churches. Churches then proclaimed God’s devotion to the downtrodden, and all was good.

Then they came for the air. They said having the fourth most unbreathable air is of no concern but EPA rules are bad for Hoosiers. The utilities gathered profits, and all was good.

Then they came for public safety. They said guns do not kill people and extended gun rights to school grounds, public places, and the properties of unwilling owners. The NRA gave its blessing, and all was good.

Then they came for women’s health. They said a pregnancy resulting from rape is a “gift from God” and shuttered many abortion clinics. Elderly men were pleased, and all was good.

Then they came for public funding. They said lower taxes for businesses magically benefit all and then pitted Hoosier against Hoosier in a competition for less. Only one man was pleased, and all was good.

Then they came for our votes … never again.

Freedom can be abused by religion

I was utterly dumbfounded to discover on March 9 a letter titled “Liberty — or licentiousness” by a pastor, Dr. Doug Cassel.

The day before I read this, I had just completed a contrary view which could be titled, “Freedom vs. license.”

Dr. Cassel writes, “Today the homosexuals (and many others for that matter) are pressing upon all three branches of our government to give them a license to sin and call it liberty. … They want to get a license for what God calls abomination.”

My letter-to-be suggests that freedom can also be abused by religious license — the mistaken belief in what is God’s word or God’s law, leading to the stoning of homosexuals.

See Leviticus. And later, Christ’s condemnation of the atrocity of stoning.
