RONN MOTT: One and done, 2014 style

TERRE HAUTE — Hoosiers, this time of the year, turn their minds and emotions to the grand old game of “hoops.” It has been a very disappointing year for the Cream and Crimson of Indiana University, since they will probably not get a bid to play in the NCAA Tournament. Their freshmen and sophomores did not quite gel into the team they needed and it’s a cry for “wait ’til next year.”

Indiana State did better…20 plus games in the win column ranking second to Wichita State, and also second in the MVC Tournament. You would think with their victories and finishing second in the regular season and second in the tournament, the NCAA might give them a bid. But don’t hold your breath. I would hope, now, for an NIT bid. That would be a little more relaxing and, for the players, more fun. The Hoosiers may find themselves a bid in the NIT as well.

There has been a resurrection of talk recently about no more “one and done.” That is, if you sign to a college you cannot go pro until the end of your sophomore season. Which means at least for one of those two years you may actually have to go to class … that makes it more difficult to wear a university’s color and say goodbye after one year, and also changes the idea of eight, skate and donate.

I doubt this will go through, or anything like it, because it is easier for the universities to accept a player that is not going to be there long enough to graduate and, for the players, a quicker trip to a paycheck.

When I was first writing about sports in the 1950s, you could not turn pro until your class had graduated. I remember Wilt Chamberlain having to play with the Globe Trotters for a year while he waited for his class at Kansas to graduate. Life was a lot tougher in the nifty ’50s. I don’t like the rule of “one and done.” It dilutes the effort of what schools are there for. And that is to teach and train. Difficult to do in one year.
