TERRE HAUTE — Unhappy with election changes

I just participated in our primary election. I would like to register my absolute disgust with both the changes of venue as well as the new method of conducting elections.

First with venues. According to the county list of election venues, I noticed a Methodist Church being one of them. Does not that violate separation of church and state? What is wrong with having election venues in public schools?

Secondly, to the method of election. First, we had to register and receive a ticket and then a lady had to enter an authorizing code plus our ticket number to allow us to start registering our votes. In case it did not dawn on anyone, one of the hallmarks of a democracy is secret balloting. Our votes can now be tracked thanks to our ticketing.

Additionally, this new complicated method is designed to disenfranchise poor, uneducated, elderly and anyone else not steeped in computer usage.

Thirdly, other than a list of new venues, no pamphlet or brochure had been sent to any voter as to educate the public as to the new method of computerized election.

Whoever voted for these changes of election venue and methods had only one thing in mind: Undermining democracy.

Appreciation for street cleanup

The Terre Haute Street Department and Terre Haute Fire Department did an outstanding job of cleaning the sidewalks and road surface on the Fruitridge Avenue bridge, just north of Wabash.

Every spring, the sidewalks are covered in inches of sand and grit, whereby pedestrians, runners and bicyclists are more likely to become injured due to falls. The safety of the public is ultimately the concern of all citizens, but taxpayers entrust the city departments to react in the most timely and efficient manner to such safety concerns.

I learned today that a city fire hose and a few manned brooms make for a very well-groomed bridge. In other words, thank you.
