RONN MOTT: Media merry-go-round

Round and round it goes, where it stops nobody knows. That isn’t a unique phrase to this writer or to this era in time. But, when it comes to the musical chairs of broadcasting, it certainly applies. Even the tight grip the multi-owned stations and their cookie-cutter formats and vanilla-sounding talent have not been able to stop the movement of people from job to job.

Bill Cain, formerly market manager and, lastly, operations manager for Midwest Communications here in Terre Haute, was released from his responsibilities after doing a stellar job for the company. That was just before Christmas last year.

Doug Edge, sales manager for WTWO and WAWV, tells me that Bill has signed on as sales account executive for the stations. We’re sure Bill will do a good job and we wish him the best of luck.

Jon Swaner has left his weekend anchor desk duties at NewsChannel 2 to join the staff at WTHI-TV. Jon has already made his first appearances reporting on many things. He told me he was happy to be working for Channel 10 and his family is glad he will have some weekends off. Jon was primarily the anchor man for Channel 2 news on the weekend. Jon and I worked together when Crossroads Communications and all their stations were at 13th and Ohio. I played the tunes on WAXI and Jon did the news. We had a pretty good time. Glad to see he is doing well.

We failed to acknowledge or congratulate Party Marty for being selected as the Tribune-Star Readers’ Choice favorite disc jockey. Marty is on the new country stick (102.7), which is owned by Midwest Communications. He and the other talent have made the station, a fairly new station, a popular challenge to Hi- 99. Marty and country music go together like ham and cheese or, perhaps in Marty’s case, it goes together like beer and pretzels. Congrats to Marty.

Ronn Mott, a longtime radio personality in Terre Haute, writes commentaries for the Tribune-Star. His pieces are published online Tuesday and Thursday on Tribstar.com, and in the print and online editions on Saturday.
