An expansion of county parks

Vigo County’s already stellar parks system is about to get better. And it will cost the county very little, which is the kind of community development taxpayers have to love.

The county parks and recreation board this week approved the purchase of 822 acres of land from Pfizer Inc. for $50,000, which will be paid for by a grant from the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and the county’s Redevelopment Commission.

The parks board has been studying potential uses of the acreage and has some good ideas, including a dog park and recreational trails. The area is located around the former Pfizer plant in southwestern Vigo County near the industrial park.

We’re pleased to see the parks department and its governing board are not  content to rest on the laurels of a good park system and are willing to explore ways to make it even better. We’re anxious to see what the future holds in this area for the people of Vigo County.

A teacher, visionary and leader

We join the community in mourning the passing of Dr. Jerry Mansfield, a lifelong teacher of science and technology who played a significant role in the founding of the Terre Haute Children’s Museum.

Mansfield died this week after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was 67. As a popular and admired teacher in Vigo County schools, he touched many lives. But he was willing to expand and use his knowledge, vision and leadership outside the classroom, which led to a number of community contributions, including his role as co-founder of the children’s museum.

Mansfield left a mark in this community for which his family and friends can be forever proud.
