Governor can put words into action

I was pleased to read that Gov. Pence wants to emphasize improving Indiana’s poor infant mortality rate. I hope his actions follow his stated wishes.

If I seem less than sure that the governor will do more than pay lip service to this meritorious goal it is because the easiest way to improve infant mortality while increasing employment in Indiana has already been rejected. I refer to the offered expansion of Medicaid, paid by the federal government in full for three years and then 90 percent paid into the future.

I am only somewhat informed about medical matters, but it makes sense to me that insurance coverage for between 250,000 and 300,000 Hoosiers will surely include prenatal care not now being provided. And this must improve infant mortality. And if all those people have even this limited health insurance then the hospitals will have less unreimbursed care and will need additional staffing.

As a licensed life and health insurance agent for over 40 years I have learned that the health side of my business has dwindled as fewer can afford to buy it. The Affordable Care Act has flaws, but no alternative has been proposed. I am left with the question of what better choice is there. Certainly I see none.
