RONN MOTT: No objection to same-sex marriage

TERRE HAUTE — I suppose if my place in life were different, I might care. But my place in life is not different, so I have no objection to same-sex couples getting married. The State of Indiana policymakers trying to change their constitution for this event is wrong. It comes down to two people deciding to spend their lives together, perhaps raising children together, working and paying taxes, and attempting to be good citizens. Their sexual orientation is nobody’s business but their own.

Because I am of a certain age, I am not totally comfortable in this. I am not, however, prepared to make a stand against, or for, based on ancient scripture and the social or political mores of this day in 2014.

As I said in the beginning, I really don’t care. It is, as I have stated, none of my business. Two people wanting to be together forever, living under the laws of the land and being ordinary citizens, and the State of Indiana and the right-wing political juggernaut is making this a political issue. Is the Republican majority in the state legislature going to regulate other parts of our lives because they don’t agree as to what our lives may be?

The Founding Fathers of this country were not devout in any of their faiths. Some were rigid fundamentalists and others were left-over Illuminati. (The Illuminati were searchers of intelligence, scientific investigation, and believers of the rights of all men.) I guess the legislature of Indiana wants to do everybody’s thinking for them. Not for me. I’ll do my own thinking, just like I choose my own path of religion.

So you’re a gay man, or a woman who is a lesbian, and you wish to marry the person you live with and to enjoy living peacefully under the law? Bully for you!

Let’s say you do this and then look to me and I say, “I don’t care.” What two private citizens do is none of my business. And if Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Jefferson were here, I’m sure they would say the same thing.

I’m not going to get into a moral issue because it depends on what your morals are. I don’t remember any quote of Jesus making a stand against people with different sexual orientations. It doesn’t mean He didn’t say it, it just means I don’t remember reading it. Paul was the one who appeared to be concerned about this and wrote about it. Paul’s teachings seem to be a rock the Roman Church stands on, yet the Roman Church has been encased in homosexuality for centuries and it has done rather well except where it has mistreated children.

So, I’ll leave it as I am … a simple person, born in a small village in western Indiana … someone who is well-read and does care about his fellow humans. It is not my place to say, or to care, one way or another. Why does it matter so? I don’t believe it does. And there is where I leave this.

The marriage ban proponents are wrong. Those in politics who are wrong may carry the day for awhile, but the avalanche of history is coming their way.
