Supporter: Bucshon wrongly accused

In an Oct. 18, 2013, editorial (“Ignore spin, embrace the facts”), the Terre Haute Tribune-Star wrongly accused Congressman Dr. Larry Bucshon of twisting and shading the facts regarding his vote against the temporary measure to end the partial government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling. Ironically, when you “embrace all of the facts,” the Tribune-Star, not Dr. Bucshon, is the one employing the age-old “spin” trick.

In the same press statement quoted by the Tribune-Star, Dr. Bucshon explained that “the United States should not default on its payments” and that he had “worked to avoid the prospect of default.” Citing the lack of any deficit reduction, cuts in spending or substantial changes to ObamaCare, Congressman Bucshon went on to explain that he could not support the temporary measure because it “does not offer any real solutions to address the challenges we face as a nation.”

In the days and weeks leading up to the government shutdown, Dr. Bucshon supported four separate measures including compromises that would have resulted in reductions in government spending and avoided the shutdown. Unfortunately, President Obama and Senate Democrats refused to negotiate and refused to accept anything short of continuing operation of the government “at current funding levels.” In so doing, the proverbial “can” of unsustainable spending was once again kicked down the road, passing the responsibility for this massive debt onto future generations of Americans.

The temporary measure Dr. Bucshon did not support only serves to delay serious discussions on spending cuts for a short time while our government continues to spend far more money than it takes in. All that the temporary measure  accomplished was to set up another “super committee” showdown for Dec. 13.  With the makeup of this committee likely to be very similar to the “super committee” of 2011, I fear that we will be experiencing yet another “Groundhog Day” moment just as American families are preparing to celebrate the holidays.

We elect our congressmen and senators to offer solutions to the problems we face as a nation, not to repeatedly postpone those important decisions indefinitely or to a time that is politically convenient or advantageous. In voting against the temporary measure, Dr. Bucshon showed his willingness to face the important issues of our nation head on and stand up for the values and beliefs of fellow Hoosiers. I am proud to have Dr. Bucshon representing us in Washington, D.C.
