Appreciation for city forester

I recently had the pleasure of attending a reception hosted by Mayor Bennett and our city forester, Sheryle Dell. The purpose of this reception was to honor businesses, organizations and individuals who have worked to contribute to the beauty of Terre Haute’s green space.

It was wonderful to see these people recognized for their hard work. During the last several years much has been done to improve our image by creating more green areas.

I do feel, however, that Mayor Bennett missed an opportunity to recognize an individual who, since she has relocated  to Terre Haute, has worked tirelessly to help improve Terre Haute, and to educate the citizens on the value of our green spaces. Sherlye Dell has spent countless hours meeting with people to help them understand the impact of the emerald ash borer.

She has also worked the last two years distributing tree seedlings to residents, all with the hope of increasing the beauty of our community.

To me her finest project has been the planting of trees along Brown Avenue. Once a barren stretch of land, Brown Avenue is now a beautifully landscaped area which is a pleasure to view. She has not just randomly planted trees; she has taken the effort to design a plan which works best for the area.

We are extremely fortunate to have an individual with her knowledge working for the city. The next time you drive down Brown Avenue, take time to notice the landscape design, then say “Thank you, Sherlye.”
