RONN MOTT: Anniversary

This is an anniversary of sorts. I’ve been writing this little bit of business for a year now. I am quite proud to be doing so in the same newspaper I learned to read by the time I was in the second grade. (I’m not bragging about me so much as the wonderful teacher who taught us to read phonetically … Marion Davidson. Learning to read actually started me on my career in the media.)

I don’t have a particular direction and even though I do write about politics, I don’t consider myself a political writer. The things I write about are so obvious a blind pig could sniff them out. Will Rogers said a long time ago, “I only know what I read in the newspaper.” That’s true enough for me, but you can add to that TV, radio, and what I see and hear.

It’s really people I know, people I run into, places I go, and situations I find myself in. I know often I’m writing about things that frustrate you, the reader. I also know when I write about the political situation in this country I make some of you very angry. And, of course, when I anger some, it leads others to applause. That’s how it should be. If I wrote trying to get everybody to agree with me, it would be an exercise in futility. I am surprised sometimes the things people respond to. When I proved how little I know about Roman numerals, it created much mail and email, and even phone calls. Who knew? Evidently, a lot more than I did.

I’m not at all surprised at the anger we cause about the current political scene. It is totally idiotic and the world is laughing. The problem is Congress is full of people who do not fit the demographic makeup of the country. Congress is, in the main, made up of old, fat, rich, white men who don’t have a clue about what is happening. Or worse, why it is happening.

I do want to thank Max Jones, editor of this fine newspaper, Mark Bennett, and reporter Arthur Foulkes, who have befriended me and helped one of the oldest rookies in any newspaper in this country.

Don’t expect me to change. Mellowing is an appreciation of time and the aging process. No major changes, however.

I’m really amazed I conjure up three of these pieces every week. Maybe since I yakked it up for so many years in radio, it is not to be totally unexpected.

So here we go on year number two. Thanks for reading this, and thanks for being so understanding in my role of opinion writing, because I know not everybody agrees. But, thanks for reading anyway.

Ronn Mott, a longtime radio personality in Terre Haute, writes commentaries for the Tribune-Star. His pieces are published online Tuesday and Thursday on, and in the print and online editions on Saturday.
