LIZ CIANCONE: As we age, thrill of moving diminishes

TERRE HAUTE — You’d think I would have moving down to a science. Heaven knows I have had plenty of experience.

I was 4 years old when my parents provided my first experience , and I got acquainted with a new home, a new town and new friends. I’ve never forgotten Marilyn Cole who introduced herself and became my first new friend.

Only three years fast forward and we moved back to the city we had left. We remained there for less than six months before moving to Yorkville. So, by the time I was 7 years old, I had lived in three houses and attended second grade in three schools.

Somehow moving then was a thrilling adventure. Of course, Mom and Dad were responsible for the logistics and all I had to do was stay out of the way. It wasn’t until I grew up and had to pack and shift for myself that moving became more of a mess than an adventure.

Yorkville still seems like home because that’s where we lived for more than eight years — in five different houses. Still, moving from second grade through 10th grade and making lots of teenage friends seems to have sealed the idea of a hometown.

I’ll spare details of additional moves, but moving didn’t spare me. I even changed college dorm rooms a few times, and when I graduated and went to work, I moved a few more times.

Finally, I figured I was settled with a pleasant apartment and a paying job. It was about then that I met my Best Friend. I’d known him in college, but there were no sparks. This time was different. Since he had been born and raised in only one house, I figured we would nest for the rest of our lives. Guess again!

I pass lightly over our eviction in the middle of the night when our landlady lost it. She saw my BF returning — in uniform - from an Air Force Reserve meeting and thought he was a policeman coming to arrest her. But since that memorable night, we have packed, unpacked and repacked seemingly endless times.

Moving has its advantages, but getting behind the furniture to clean dust bunnies is about the best incentive I can think of offhand. Finding where you put things in the new digs is about the most frustrating.

Now that I’ve graduated to a move-it-yourself, I think I have achieved a last nest. I certainly hope so. It seems like a great place to settle down and find new friends.
