RONN MOTT: Don’t like Colbert? Don’t watch

TERRE HAUTE — The conservative political camp, the Tea Party movement, the NRA, the KKK, and all their many followers are highly upset with the CBS decision to put Stephen Colbert in David Letterman’s place on the Late Show when Letterman retires next year.

The conservatives are getting on everywhere they can to complain about the CBS decision. I can’t imagine why they are so angry. This is a comedy show and it doesn’t appear to this longtime media person that Letterman has been any more liberal or conservative than anyone else. And Stephen Colbert has been doing this act as a conservative newsman on Comedy Central. If I were a conservative like these other folks, I’d be glad someone other than Fox News will be on the air.

The conservatives have this over-riding, super right-wing network that will lie, cheat and carry on madly to keep their conservative credentials intact. What else do you want? I guess to most of these conservatives having their own television network as their propaganda arm just isn’t enough.

Colbert has been doing a character — a right-wing, blowhard character — and maybe that is what has made the conservatives angry. As I understand it, he is a practicing Roman Catholic, teaches Sunday School in his personal life and is a husband and father. That should make rather good credentials for him as he gets the Late Show under his control.

I don’t believe conservatives make up a majority of any late night audience because the show and its content do not appeal to them.

I don’t complain very much about Fox News even though they bend the truth every time they open their mouths. I like to have them there … it gives ordinary and honest reporting a chance to be measured against them.

I suppose the right wing will have to do what all the rest of us have to do. When we disagree with something, we turn off the TV. That’s the beauty of a show that comes on a set of communication you can turn off at will.

So, cry baby cry, but the most effective weapon you’re going to have is the on or off button. As for me, I hate to see David Letterman go, but it might be interesting to see what Stephen Colbert will say or do as host in the footsteps Letterman is leaving behind.
