EDITORIAL: Parks proposal worth pursuing

Fowler wilderness could sport a nice mountain-biking facility

TERRE HAUTE — Those who have had the pleasure of visiting and exploring the Fowler Park Wilderness Area adjacent to the park in southern Vigo County know what a treasure it is.

The 301-acre area is located on the east side of Bono Road across from the Fowler Park campground, lake and Pioneer Village. The wilderness has a rolling, heavily forested terrain and a rugged trail used by hikers and horseback riders. A long, scenic lake formed by past strip-mining operations is used for fishing.

Because it is such a wonderful asset to the county’s parks system, we’re pleased to see the area being considered for further recreational development. The county park board is in the early stages of discussion on the possibility of creating a mountain-bike trail inside the wilderness. It is an innovative idea worth exploring.

New parks superintendent Kara Kish sees such a project as a way to open the wilderness area to more activity and spark county tourism. She explains that a mountain-biking facility would allow people to “intermix with nature and the environment but not overtake the natural environment.” We agree.

The park board will act on a resolution to create a steering committee for the project at its meeting next month. We encourage its members to support further exploration of the proposal.

You can say that again

“While my office is duty bound to defend the authority of our state legislature and their decisions, I recognize that people have strongly held and vastly different views on the issue of marriage and ask that everyone show respect with civility to our Supreme Court and our constitutional system. Regardless of the different views people may hold, marriage should be a source of unity and not division.”
