RONN MOTT: Shopping

I’ve been collecting music since the 1950s. Of course, all my collecting was 45 RPMs and long-playing albums. Since the 1980s, that collecting has been CDs. And I know there are other ways to collect music and put it on your iPhone and on your computer, but I always liked having the best of whomever. My albums have been stored in my basement and my CDs are stored elsewhere.

You can imagine my shock and surprise the other day when I was in Books-a-Million buying a birthday present for my friend and history buff, David Frisse. (Some people find it difficult to buy for David, but I just buy him a book I would like to have.) While I was giving the books a perusal, I stumbled across the fact they were not only selling vinyl (LPs) but also record players. And I thought to myself, how long has it been since I’ve seen a record player in a commercial business?

So I asked some of the obvious questions and thought it was great that vinyl was going through a remarketing birth and I thought maybe it was a good thing I didn’t throw mine away. I remember some of the young technocrats I have worked with telling me the fidelity on a good LP was pretty hard to beat.

I went to pay for my book and I saw small wings you attach to your tennis or running shoes, or sportswear … some are black, some red, some pink, and some look as if they came off a small dragon. I don’t believe any of these will make you go faster, run harder or longer, but it’s just another idea someone had and now the public can buy them.

I’m sure my friend, David, will enjoy his book. Now I’m faced with the dilemma of whether I should buy a new turntable for myself and all my LPs, or just procrastinate and see what else comes down the pike. As you know from reading this effort, I’m not in any hurry to jump into new technology or to jump backward into old technology.
