Woody Allen — writer, comedian, film maker, actor, director — has recently been accused of sexually molesting one of the adopted children of Mia Farrow. I don’t believe it.
Woody has, in interviews and in articles written about him, admitted to liking women above all other pleasures. It would seem that could be the truth. Recently, he was quoted as saying he got into movie-making to have his pick of young actresses, and saying that it was painful to be growing old and that the same young actresses had no interest in him now. Being desirous of young actresses would put most American males in the category of saying “right on.” It doesn’t make one a pervert, necessarily.
Mia Farrow got into the card game of life without having a full deck to play with. She wants to be thought of as an Earth Mother willing and able to put her arms around as many children as is possible to do so. Her anger at Woody Allen stems from him running off with and marrying Soon-Yi, the adopted daughter of Farrow and her husband, Andre Previn. Previn, music director of MGM Studios, a famous jazz piano man in his own right and director of symphonic orchestras, appeared to be walking a straighter line than her other boyfriends and husbands.
Ms. Farrow seemed to adopt a child every time there was a ripple of discomfort in the home she was putting together for all of these kids. Woody marrying Soon-Yi threw Mia Farrow into a maddening anger that hasn’t subsided even after all these many years. You can call Woody a creep, or a cradle-robber (Soon-Yi was 19 years old and the eldest of the girls Mia Farrow had adopted), but none of this makes Woody Allen a pedophile.
The authorities looked into this when Farrow first raised her angry voice, but the prosecutor found nothing he could use against Allen in this case. It is easy to point one’s finger and accuse, but it is more difficult to prosecute under the guidelines of the law. This is not the first time Mia Farrow has screamed about this, and with only a child’s recommendation — she is now 27 or 28 — there is very little to prove these accusations.
Woody Allen has always seemed to be more than a little bit eccentric. He is certainly one of this generation’s most talented men because of his writing, film directing and acting abilities. Hollywood breeds men who covet young women. But even Hollywood doesn’t condone sex with a 7-year-old. But saying it and proving it are entirely different things. Farrow obviously is still extremely angry and my money is bet on the fact that she will stay angry.
Woody Allen and Soon-Yi appear to have a rather good relationship, and the members of that situation who are still harboring angry thoughts are Mia and the two children she has had for years to aid and help construct a story that by now they certainly believe.
It seems to me to be a rather convoluted story and to this point no prosecutor has been willing to take it to a grand jury because of the lack of evidence. So, for Mia, it is put up or shut up. If you can prove it, do so, and if you cannot, let it be done.
