TERRE HAUTE — Law the issue in judge election

A recent political advertisement in the April 27 Tribune-Star, paid for by the Committee to Elect Lucky Reddy for Superior Court Division 2, reinforced my decision not to cast my ballot for this candidate.

The above-referenced political advertisement stated: “Her (Reddy) decisions will be based on common sense and fairness while ensuring that children are the priority.”

Perhaps the writers of this advertisement are unaware legal decisions are based on legal precedents, not on “common sense” (common sense is a subjective term, based on each individual’s interpretation). While people may believe that certain legal decisions and legal precedents make “common sense,” this is not the standard of American jurisprudence nor the heritage of our legal system, nor the mindset any judicial candidate should have.

This advertisement further states that not only will Reddy’s decisions be based on common sense and fairness, but  her decisions will ensure “that children are the priority.”

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but whether a person is a “working mother of three” (as the ad states about Reddy) or a “single working father,” or a man or woman who may not have children, this election should be based on the candidate’s knowledge and experience in a specific, related field of law, relevant to the court’s jurisdiction.

Children may be Reddy’s priority, and that’s a great priority for any mother or father, but in the halls of justice, the priority should be ensuring the relevant law is applied to the issue at hand, and that the law is applied equally under equal circumstances.

Something new for the council

I am writing this in order to support Curtis DeBaun IV for Vigo County Council, third district.

Mr. DeBaun is trying to do something new, something different. He is pledging to donate at least his first-year salary from the council to local charities. I find this to be a rare thing for a candidate to do, but it goes to show what kind of person he is.

He has also stated that he does not want to make a career out of politics. He claimed that he wants to serve, and step aside when someone better than him decides to run.

I have known Curtis for a few years, and I truly believe by having him on the county council we will be better off.
