RONN MOTT: Spring activities settle into northside park

TERRE HAUTE — Some say young love blossoms like the flowers in the spring. It must be spring, because we witnessed the first wedding ceremony performed in the Collett Park gazebo on a recent Saturday.

The groom wore gray, and the bride was in traditional white. Family and friends were seated in chairs provided for them, and a soft, spring breeze helped usher in the first wedding of the year. We could not hear what was being said or if there was any music being played, but the laughter of children in the playground in the area north of the gazebo gave a nice accompaniment to this special event.

As I sat there with my wife and watched the nuptials being performed, I somehow felt younger. Maybe it was the nice spring day, or maybe it was the thought of these two young people starting one of their life’s important events together not knowing for sure where it will lead or where it will go. As an uninvited spectator, I felt good about it.

Earlier in the day with the sinking sun in the west on our backs, my little, golden tabby male cat, Mellow, and I sat on the top of the steps at the end of our sidewalk and watched the activities of people in the park. I saw Judy, a lady we had written about earlier, leading her two large dogs on a trek through the park. The dogs seem to be adapted to Judy’s step and stride and they are lovely to watch.

Dogs are the dominant animals we see in the park, if you exclude the many squirrels. I watched a man with his dog, and I don’t know what breed it was, but it was on point with its eyes fixed on a squirrel a few feet ahead of it. Suddenly, the dog took off with the man running behind the dog as he gave the dog his head to chase the squirrel. Alas, the squirrel ran up a tree and the dog, obviously a very smart dog, realized the chase was over and went trotting off, calmly enjoying his walk.

The walkers and runners have been out enjoying the warmer temperatures and the beginning of the green grass in the neighborhood. It’s hard to say which sex tries hardest at this running thing, but this past week I think the women were out in stronger numbers than the men. Mellow and I enjoy being watchers on the park, the activity, the warm breezes, and it creates generally good feelings.

We took a moment or two to tease Mellow with a small stick which he soon grasped and took away from me. He likes our play time, and so do I.

The small white flowers are beginning to pop up and if a cold spell doesn’t harm them they will soon be covering the ground like a white blanket. I wonder what Mr. Collett would think about this land gift he gave to the city at the end of the 19th century. I know many enjoy it, and I certainly do as well.
